Part 15 – Reunion of Harmony
=========================================
“However, if you don’t trust me, there is nothing I can do.” He turned the Lugar around and handed the pistol to Krueger. There was palpable sense of relief in the room. Krueger took the gun and held it tightly in his hand.
“If he’s handing you his weapon, it means he has another one,” the Doctor announced. He turned to the Master. “A tissue compressor eliminator perhaps?”
“Given the way I arrived Doctor, bringing such a weapon would have been quite impossible.” He turned back to the scientists. “Gentlemen, feel free to search me,” the Master offered, arms spread wide. “Please, I insist.” Lochley came forward and patted him down without result.
“So much for the Doctor’s paranoia,” the Master gloated.
“Gentlemen, I think there’s much for us talk about.” Krueger motioned for the others to join him in the inner workshop. Smythe and Lochley followed, leaving the Doctor and Master alone in the machine shop. The Master smiled.
“I’ve been thinking about something you said earlier,” said the Doctor. “You said you had ‘seen the universe for what it is’. What did you mean by that?”
“I’m flattered that you hang on my every word, Doctor,” the Master answered pleased with himself. “The view of the universe from the Eye of Harmony is a wondrous thing; the interconnectedness, the harmony within the chaos, it all makes sense. To sense it, to touch it.”
“To touch it?”
“Yes, from the Eye, I was able to have an effect on certain individuals. I could sense people and affect them telepathically over time. Oh I admit the affect was limited, and required great effort. Thus, I chose individuals who were already inclined to go down the path I desired, with only the slightest of telepathic suggestion.”
“That would explain the enlarged cattle grubs. Your telepathic field enhanced their growth, a parasite enhancing another parasite.”
“Insults are a very weak weapon, Doctor,” sneered the Master.
“You obviously want the Hoverons for something. But to what end?” asked the Doctor.
“I thought Krueger and the others had already explained the plan.”
“They intend to hand them over the United Nations.”
“As do I, my dear Doctor.”
“What’s the catch? You would spend this sort of time on something you couldn’t control. Of course, you figured out how to control them, haven’t you.”
“Davros failed because he lost control of his own creation. Strictly as machines, the Fireflies will never have a will of their own.”
“That’s why their first attempt resembled a Dalek.”
“Merely, the power of suggestion on receptive minds,” the Master chuckled. “Of course, if you were to suggest to the scientists that I’ve been telepathically manipulating them from oblivion, they would not be impressed by such incredible claim.” The Master smiled serenely.
“Telepathic control, of the Hoverons themselves,” the Doctor realised aloud. “Why did you kill the gauchos?”
“That was unfortunate. They were credible witnesses of my early tests. I didn’t want the scientists to be alerted that I was ‘borrowing’ a Firefly.”
“But now you’ve told me.”
“Feel free to alert the scientists, if you wish. But, you don’t exactly have the highest credibility with them.” At that moment, the scientists returned.
“We have made our decision,” announced Krueger. He was interrupted by the sound of the door opening. Deiter had returned.
“Ah good. Deiter, please remove the Doctor from the property,” Krueger ordered.
Deiter moved directly to the Master, and grabbed him.
“No Deiter, the other one!” Lochley corrected him. But Deiter did not seem to hear.
“You will obey” the Master intoned.
“No more Master” Deiter said in an accentless voice. “For too long, you oppressed us,” accused Deiter. The Master seemed at a loss. “Have you forgotten us?” Deiter asked.
Faye came in the door, out of breath, as if she had been running.
“Doctor, that green goop came out of the TARDIS console again,” Faye explained. “This time it got Deiter.” Deiter raised the Master by the throat against the wall. The Doctor rushed to Deiter.
“Who are you?” Deiter didn’t answer, rage growing in his eyes. “Are you…. Tremanock?”
Dieter stopped at hearing that name. He turned to the Doctor.
“Yes, and Lauretimeranordavundar” answered Deiter. Shock crossed the Doctor’s face.
“Of course. You’ve both been gone a long time.
“Who are Tremanock and Lauretima…”
“Lauretimeranordavundar was the 93rd Keeper of the Matrix. She disappeared mysteriously long ago. Some wondered whether she fell into the Eye of Harmony. And Tremanock was Rassilon’s lab assistant. History tells us he fell into the Eye during Rassilon’s initial time experiments. So the Master was not the only one to survive the Eye.”
“We were freed from oblivion when Gallifrey was destroyed. But then we became victims of the Master.”
“Victims of the Master? You both fell into the Eye before he was even born.”
“He oppressed us telepathically within the Eye. Sharing the Eye with the Master’s twisted malevolence was a living hell. And now he plans to visit his malevolence on the universe. He must be stopped!”
Suddenly, a Firefly came whirring into room and slashed at Deiter’s back. He cried out in pain. The Master had telepathically summoned a protector.
“Who’s operating the Firefly?” asked Sir Avery, looking around confused.
“He is,” accused the Doctor. “Telepathically!”
The Firefly came around to strike Deiter a second time. Krueger ran and grabbed the control unit. He feverishly tried to regain control of the floating robot. The Firefly lurched, then turned, then headed directly at Krueger, impaling him with its sharp manipulator arm. Blood spurted out his mouth.
Deiter threw the Master hard against the wall. The Firefly bobbed momentarily, and then reoriented itself facing Deiter.
“I will not serve another tyrant!” yelled Deiter, this time his German accent had returned. It was clearly Deiter speaking.
The Firefly’s manipulators raised and pointed at Deiter. The robot began to charge.
