The Doctor squinted but still couldn't make out who the humanoid was. Krier was raising his weapon and ready to storm through the jungle into battle with his Rutan foes. The Doctor gripped his arm. 'Are you sure about this? Does it not make military sense to wait for support?'
'A Sontaran that does not face his enemies is not worthy.' Krier pushed back the branches and stepped forward. He broke into a run, opening fire as the three Rutans began to turn in his direction. The gunfire lit up the area, and the Doctor caught sight of the humanoid in danger, it was Anna. She turned on her heel and darted through the trees, a Rutan close behind her, changing shape into a cheetah, clearly more adept at traversing the jungle terrain and catching its prey. The Doctor left Krier to deal with the other Rutans and side-stepped through the trees that seperated them from the riverbed. He came out to see Anna running straight towards him, followed by the Rutan Cheetah. She saw him, and grinned widely as he outstretched his arms, lifting her up and back through the trees as the Cheetah snapped at her heels, bristling with Rutan electricity. It changed its shape back into a Rutan, and a tendril shot out at them, narrowly avoiding the Doctors chest.
Anna got her breath back and looked up at the Doctor. 'Thank god it wasn't a real Cheetah, think I would've been done for.'
'Almost certainly.' the Doctor replied bluntly, then winked at her. 'Good to see you, where have you been hiding?'
Another tendril shot through the gap in the trees, the Rutan was now changing back into the shape of Doctor Kurtz a thinner model able to get through the trees. 'Maybe I should tell you later?'
The Doctor saw Kurtz approach them, electricity crackling from his fingertips. 'Agreed.' The two turned back to the clearing where Krier was holding his own against two Rutans, Krier struck one of the Rutans with a shot, it screeched, flailed its tentacles a little before halting abruptly. The Doctor and Anna kept running back toward the river, Krier backing away, not wanting to expose his probic vent to the Rutans.
They came to the riverbed, seeing the boat come across, still a fair distance away. 'You must take arms Doctor!' Krier yelled.
The Doctor shook his head. 'Not my style I'm afraid...' He turned to see the boat, not yet near enough to make a run for it. The Rutans were now coming out of the clearing, the third one crawling along behind them.
'Then what do you suggest coward? More of your words?' Krier asked, grabbing some more of the silver spheres from his belt.
'Glad to see you've been making friends...' Anna muttered, as Krier tossed one of the spheres into the middle of the group of Rutans, it exploded, scattering them, as they lurched from side to side, dazed.
Viebel had seen the explosion, and tried to get back to the riverbed quicker. However his arms were tired, and his insides burned, the wound in his side still agony. He thought of the look the Doctor had given him when he had told him of his peoples healing abilities, what did he know? And why was he not telling him? He continued rowing towards the Doctor, and, perhaps the answers to his questions.
Pavel saw the Sontarans approach on the monitor. 'They're here...' he told Morgan. '...this will have to wait.'
Morgan nodded, and watched as Pavel exited through the curtain to speak with the alien visitors. He began fiddling with the controls, trying to bring up a databank, any information at all to explain the origins of this weapons system. He wasn't succesful, hearing raised voices, he pushed a button that brought up the monitor. One of the squat figures had removed his helmet and was aiming a thin pencil shaped weapon at Pavels chest. The other two wore helmets and watched as their leader opened fire, striking Pavel across the chest. Morgan could not hear what was going on, but, seeing his colleague in danger, sprung into action and pushed the switch. The floor beneath the Sontarans began to glow red, taking this as the targetting computer, Morgan flicked another switch, and a square of bright red light surrounded them, growing brighter and brighter until it stopped abruptly, leaving dust and a small device that looked like a stone tablet. Morgan could not quite believe what he had just done, and promptly fainted.
The Rutans were starting to regain their strength and began moving forward once more. The boat was near enough now, the Doctor turned towards it, grabbing Anna by the hand and began running, splashing through the river towards Viebel and the boat. One of the Rutans reached the riverbed, unseen by Krier and went to dip a tentacle into the river. Krier turned to see this, just as it was about to electrify the water, he looked to the Doctor who was trudging through the river, licked his lips and let it happen.
