Part 15 – Surrounded
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Faye and Maynberc made their way back through the cybernisation complex.
“Isn’t this a bit too far back?” Faye asked. “We’re almost back to the access corridor.”
“Yes,” said Maynberc. Besides taking his emotions, the Cybermen had also inadvertently removed his ability to effectively lie. Lying is often a function of emotions, such as fear or greed. (Had his programming been complete, that ability would have been restored.) While he understood the Doctor’s reasons for deception, Mayberc could not execute it very well, so he said as little as possible.
They were passing through the first chamber they entered on the way in. These were the victims who were furthest in the conversion process.
“We must move quickly. These Cybermen are in the final diagnostic phase,” warned Maynberc.
They hurried into the access corridor. As they did, they found three Cybermen coming their way. They turned back to the cybernisation chamber, only the see the newly converted Cybermen standing before them.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Doctor made his way to the far chamber. In the distance, he saw Deiter on his cybernisation couch. However, there were two Cybermen between them. Maynberc had been right. Deiter might already be gone. However, if Deiter was to be saved, he had to act immediately. The Doctor looked down at his weapon. A shot at this distance might very well kill Deiter as well. He tossed the weapon aside.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the mental plane, the voice repeated, “It is time for you to become like us.”
“Yes, it is,” Deiter agreed.
“NO!,” cried a third figure, a figure with tears in her eyes. It was Faye.
“I will be like them,” Deiter assured her.
“Then you will never feel again.”
“Feeling is irrelevant,” declared Deiter.
“Then, you will never feel this.” She put her arms around his neck and pushed her lips to his in a passionate kiss. “Feeling IS relevant, the most relevant thing in the universe,” she said softly in his ear.
“He will like us,” declared the Cyberman, as he approached menacingly. The Cyberman clamped a hand down on Faye’s shoulder and pushed her to ground. “You too will be like us.”
Deiter twitched. She was too..
“No!” Deiter yelled. “Not her.” The Cyberman pushed Faye down farther. Deiter punched the Cyberman in the chest, again and again. Dents began to form. With each jab, his knuckles began to feel the punches more and more. He was grateful as the pain increased. The Cyberman fell over, but he kept punching the crumpled metallic mass. As he finally stopped, tears came down his face. He heaved a heavy tired sigh.
But as he stood up, he found he was surrounded by thousands of Cybermen.
"You WILL be like us" rang in Deiter's head.
