'Just who the hell are you?' Morgan spluttered, leaping off his stool.
The Doctor raised his hands, placating. 'Calm down Dr. Morgan, I'm the Doctor.' He caught sight of the datapad on the desk. He outstretched a hand. 'And I'd very much like to help you.'
Morgan sized up this new arrival and was about to say something when an alarm bell began ringing and a red light began flashing from just behind him. He darted over to it and flicked a switch bringing up a picture of several silver spheres descending towards the planets surface. 'Oh no, oh no, oh no...this can't be.'
The Doctor leant forward, peering at the screen over Morgans shoulder. 'Krier must have contacted High Command, we've got less time than I thought.' He grabbed Morgan by the shoulders and spun him round. 'Listen to me, hand me that datapad and I'll try and get rid of the Sontarans before their reinforcements land.' Suddenly, looking into Morgans eyes the Doctor was transported back, (or is it forwards?) to a book signing. 'Oh no...' He dropped his hands from Morgans shoulders and began quickly looking at every single machine and computer bank in the room. All of it documented in his signed copy of Frank Morgan's book about lost civilsations; the temple that housed a weapons system, the tribe that knew nothing of its origins, the mysterious plague. He glanced at another maroon curtain at the end of the room, and with a heavy heart yanked it open. 'Cloning tanks...' he mumbled, looking at the rows upon rows of long black tanks with a green substance inside.
Morgan joined the Doctor by the cloning tanks. 'Exactly who the hell are you? And what's going on?'
The Doctor sighed, slapped his palm across his forehead and slid it down his face. 'How could I have been so stupid?' He raised his arms. 'This is the weapons system of the lost civilisation of Kreen'ak!'
Morgan was amazed, he had only made that realisation after years of studying the computer banks and logs, this man had deduced it in minutes. 'How did you figure it out?'
'You told me, or at least you will do in about 10 years time. In a book called "The Lost Soldiers of Kreen'ak". You sign a copy of it for a younger version of myself, blonde hair, cricket garb, celery on the lapel you wont miss him.' The Doctor slumped into the chair, noticing the Sontaran ships come ever closer to the surface.
'But, you're talking about time travel!' Morgan spluttered, incredulously. 'I mean, how else can you know of the Kreen'ak? I'm the first academic to discover their fate, their legacy.'
The Doctor nodded. 'Oh yes, absolutely. But I also know what's about to happen to this planet, to these people...' Morgan was sure he could see tears forming in this strange mans eyes. '...and I can't stop it.'
Morgan sat down next to the Doctor. 'You can't stop it?'
The Doctor shook his head. 'If I stop what's about to happen then your book is only half the length, it may not be as famous and I may never buy the book. If I don't buy the book, there's not a thought in my head about the wonderful temple on the planet Kreen...it's a paradox. I stop what happens here now, and I never come here in the first place. It's an endless paradox.'
Morgan was getting a headache. 'So what's about to happen?'
The Doctor wasn't talking to Morgan now, he was just voicing his own thought processes. 'I should have figured it out when Viebel's healing abilities failed. He's dying, he's caught the same virus as the Sontarans....'
'...because like the Sontarans, these new people of Kreen are clones of the original soldiers. Only these clones were genetically altered by the soldiers who had lost so much in the war to be without bloodlust so that they may live in peace.' Morgan cut in. 'They saw what war had done to their planet and vowed it would never happen again.'
The Doctor nodded. 'But because the Rutans engineered the virus to attack cloned DNA structure...they're at risk. They're all going to die.' The red light flashed quicker now, indicating that the Sontarans were above the temple, ready to land in a matter of minutes. 'But we'll deal with that in a minute. The original people of Kreen vowed this planet would never see a war again, I'm going to make sure they get their wish.'
The Doctor raised his hands, placating. 'Calm down Dr. Morgan, I'm the Doctor.' He caught sight of the datapad on the desk. He outstretched a hand. 'And I'd very much like to help you.'
