'Lock the doors Doctor Morgan!' The Doctor hurried back through the curtain into the main chamber. 'Enemies at the gates General Styger!' he exclaimed, arms raised. Morgan was about to come through the curtain but the Doctor hurriedly pushed him back. 'I'm sorry Doctor Morgan but I'm going to need you to man the fort.'
Styger raised his weapon and aimed it at Morgan, the Doctor throwing himself in front of the ageing archaeologist. 'Don't you dare!' roared the Doctor pointing a finger at Styger. 'This man's been protecting your beloved dataprint for all these years, and I need him to stop the Rutans entering.' Styger lowered his weapon. 'And I also need him to help send your reinforcements back to the mothership.'
Styger frowned. 'I sent for no reinforcements.'
The Doctor nodded. 'Oh I know...not very honourable in admitting defeat and to go asking for help.' He indicated for Morgan to go back behind the curtain. 'But Krier must believe you're in need of assistance.'
There was a noise outside, causing Styger to raise his weapon once again. The Doctor hurried back through the curtain to find Morgan pulling levers and pressing buttons. 'They've shorted the locking mechanisms! I can't...unless....' he pressed another couple of buttons. '...there's a back-up locking system, but...' He looked up at the Doctor. '...the Kreen'ak devised it to lock away their secrets for centuries. If I do this, we'll be trapped.'
Viebel clutched his side and fell to his knees, Anna knelt down beside him. 'Are you alright? Should I get the Doctor?'
Viebel shook his head, trying to get back on his feet. 'No. The pain has passed...I still don't understand why I wont heal.'
Anna helped Viebel back to his feet and linked arms with him, turning to take him back to the main chamber. 'The Doctor'll know what to do...he always does.'
'I fear the Protector has seen fit to end my time here.' Viebel gasped, rubbing his side, blood soaking his palm.
Anna winced, knowing full well that the Great Protector had no say in Viebel's fate at all.
The Doctor led Styger to the cloning tanks in the control room. 'Okay, you get one shot at this, once you're finished you leave this planet and take those ships with you.' He demanded, pointing to the ceiling to indicate the Sontaran spheres no doubt beginning their landing procedures.
'And what of the Rutans?' Styger asked.
'I'll deal with them too....' He replied coldly, turning to Morgan who was looking concerned by the monitors. 'Doctor Morgan?'
'You've told them to get out of here but you don't understand...this temple is sealed for centuries...a hundred years at least.' He replied, wringing his hands.
'You're forgetting one thing Doctor Morgan, I meet you ten years from now!'
Morgan shook his head. 'You did meet me ten years from now, but didn't you say you had the ability to change what happens here? Maybe you've already done it?'
The Doctor's face fell. 'Yes....yes maybe I have.' He was now deeply concerned, what had Morgans book said? It had been ages since he read it, was the temple siege included? He had to figure out a way to get everyone out of the temple, there was no way he could stop the Sontarans and the Rutans destroying the whole of Kreen from inside this temple...was there?
The children gathered on the hill, pointing to the half a dozen silver spheres that were coming through the clouds. They were hovering around the temple now, before anything else happened their parents snatched them away to take them to safety.
Krier watched as his reinforcements arrived, he licked his lips with satisfaction, weapon raised. His communication device bleeped into life. 'Krier, state your location!' ordered the Marshall.
'On the other side of the river Marshall, the Doctor and the General abandoned me here, leaving me for dead in a battle with the Rutans.' He lied.
'How many Rutans are on the surface?'
'I have encountered three, but there is no reason not to suspect the planet is crawling with these shape-shifting vermin. I suggest total annihilation of the planets surface to be absolutely certain!'
