Samuels watched the Master and Alice going into the church he smiled he was confident that Bok would deal with them. He turned his attention to Miss Hawthorne and Marlowe who hurried across the green towards Miss Hawthorne’s cottage, he smiled again and closed his eyes, although still feeling a little weak from conjuring the tornado that the Master had encountered, he was able to cast a few simple spells and wearing Magister’s talisman would enhance his powers.
Miss Hawthorne unlocked the door of her cottage and was about to go in when the door slammed shut and wouldn’t open again, she sighed and said
“Be at peace all you elementals, go back to your resting, go back I say!”
She turned the handle on the door and it opened, Marlowe followed her nervously into the cottage.
“Look Miss Hawthorne I find it hard to believe that a few herbs, talismans and such are going to be of much use in protecting us against what ever is happening out there” he began.
“I don’t’ expect you to understand Mr Marlowe but if used correctly the power of herbs and the use of the correct talismans are just the things we need. Now you go in the kitchen you’ll find a pestle and mortar on the table, some salt in the cupboard. Pour five tablespoons of salt into the mortar, I’ll be with you in a moment” Miss Hawthorne replied.
“What are you up to?” Marlowe asked.
Miss Hawthorne opened a small box on the hallway table and she produced two talismans, which were silver and very ornately decorated. One had a lion’s head engraved on it and some strange symbols this was the Talisman of Mars on the other talisman two serpents were twined together in the centre of a pentagram and again strange symbols appeared on it this was the Talisman of Mercury.
“This is the Talisman of Mars, it will help save us from our enemies! And this is my trusty Talisman of Mercury, this will keep us from any harm! Now off you go into the kitchen and prepare the salt as I have told you. I must evoke a protection ritual to charge the talismans with their secret powers”.
When nothing happened Alice opened her eyes she saw several pairs of red eyes watching from the out of the shadows. Bok hissed and snarled his hand still outstretched he didn’t seem to be sure of what to do.
“Bok you know me it’s Magister! Malelttiled Ram remember! Doctor Cornelius edge your way slowly over to that tall candelabra and bring it over here!” the Master began.
“What and risk being attacked by those other gargoyle things, you can’t be serious!” Alice protested.
An angry scowl appeared on the Master’s face. “They won’t attack unless Bok makes a move, now please I won’t ask again just do as I tell you” he insisted, trying to keep the frustration from his voice.
Alice nodded and began to edge her way over to the candelabra, under constant scrutiny of several pairs of inquisitive little red eyes. The Master continued calmly talking to Bok
“Come on Bok you remember, Eko Eko we used those words and others like it to summon Azael, you were a great help to me!” he said.
Bok tilted his head on one side as if he was listening.
“The other gargoyles they're beginning to come closer!” Alice warned.
“Never mind that Doctor Cornelius just bring me that candelabra” the Master replied.
Alice picked up the candelabra, it was fairly heavy but she managed to heave it over to the Master. Bok had lowered his hand but in an instant he raised it again, he was about to release an energy bolt towards the Master but stopped when he saw the candelabra. The Master backed Bok into a corner “Run Alice run!” he shouted.
Alice raced up the stone steps and out of the Cavern. The Master pushed the candelabra over and it fell blocking Bok’s path, he ran up the steps after Alice and closing the Cavern door he leaned heavily on it.
“There that should keep Bok nicely occupied for a while! Come on we’d better get back to the pub and find out what Miss Hawthorne and Mr Marlowe have been up to” he said.
“And how will a candelabra have any effect on this Bok creature exactly!” Alice wanted to know.
The Master smiled “Ahh well you see my dear it’s made of iron and iron is a very old very powerful magical defence. Bok won’t want to go too near because iron is something he fears, I suppose he’ll make it disappear with one of his energy bolts when he recovers from the initial shock but at least it allowed us to escape”.
They hurried back to the pub but neither Miss Hawthorne or Marlowe were anywhere in sight.
“My instincts tell me that something is holding Miss Hawthorne up at her cottage. Come on Doctor Cornelius we’d better go and see what’s happening” the Master said.
As they got to the pub door however it slammed shut and wouldn’t open no matter how hard the Master turned the handle, even putting his shoulder to it didn’t make any difference.
Miss Hawthorne had just finished evoking the protection ritual over the talismans when she heard a cry from the kitchen.
“Mr Marlowe are you alright what on earth is happening?” Miss Hawthorne began as she dashed into the kitchen.
Marlowe had been ceased by a devil like creature with horns and glowing crimson eyes, it held a wicked looking dagger up to Marlowe’s throat……….
Miss Hawthorne unlocked the door of her cottage and was about to go in when the door slammed shut and wouldn’t open again, she sighed and said
