The Doctor stood in the cellar staring through the doors into the console room, unable to move. 'Amazing isn't it?' Ryan said from behind him. 'Bet you've never seen anything like it...'
'Not strictly true...' the Doctor muttered, stepping forward and peering inside. 'May I?'
Ryan nodded, indicating for him to step inside, the Doctor obliged.
Anna paced the room, awaiting the arrival of the TARDIS in the cavernous testing room that housed the Speculum. Sterling had been laid out on one of the benches and was writhing in agony. She wished she could help but there was nothing she could do, how could she when whatever this parasite was was removing parts of Professor Sterling quicker than they could be replaced. She sighed and walked the length of the Speculum, a long cylinder that reached up to the ceiling and stretching a mile, pointing at a platform at the far end of the lab. Anna had to admit she was curious to see what it would be like to travel to a parallel universe, a world where Bush had never won the election, a world where nuclear weapons had been decomissioned, a world where her father was still alive. Perhaps not.
'Anna?' gasped Sterling from the bench. She snapped out of her thoughts of parallel worlds and hurried over to him.
'Are you okay Professor Sterling?'
'I...I think I saw something...' he replied, pointing a shaking finger at the Speculum. '...a shadow, something moved.'
'You're sure?' Anna turned to try and see if there was indeed anything there but found nothing. 'I'll take a closer look okay?' She left him alone and moved back up the side of the Speculum, not noticing the creature that now appeared from underneath the bench.
The Doctor stood in the console room, resting a hand on the console and looking up at the central column. It was more stripped down and lacked the grandiose Victoriana style he currently inhabited. He flicked a couple of switches, and paused for a moment, allowing himself a moment to think what this all meant. He was about to delve deeper but instead brought up some data on one of the monitor banks, informing him what the TARDIS was currently doing. 'You idiots.' He muttered under his breath before hurrying back out into the cellar.
Anna could see nothing on either side of the Speculum and was now returning to the bench, the poor man must be hallucinating. There was the noise of an approaching truck from outside heralding the arrival of the TARDIS, sure enough the truck sounded its horn. At the same time as Professor Sterling let out a yelp, turning, Anna saw him doubled up in pain before bursting into bright orange light and turning into particles. Anna stood there dumbfounded for a moment before hurrying to open the garage door, before she could however, the particles had appeared in front of her, reconstituting themselves in the form of a tall, slender creature with long spindly arms and legs, huge claws and a constantly shimmering face.
'WHERE IS JOHN SMITH?'
'YOU IDIOTS!' The Doctor thundered as he stepped back into the cellar. 'Do you not think that a fairly advanced piece of alien technology is sitting in the cellar of an old mansion house for a reason?' Ryan tried to respond but the Doctor cut him off. 'That..' he pointed to the TARDIS. '...is sitting there to maintain a dimensional prison! And your little experiment is that tunnel hidden behind their Raquel Welch poster.' The Doctor looked back into the console room, its familiarity terrified him, but there was no time for that just now.
Ryan's phone started ringing and the Professor held up a hand apologetically before taking the call. 'Miss Talbot? The Doctor? Yes he's here...hang on.' Ryan handed the Doctor the mobile phone.
'Anna?'
'Doctor, Professor Sterling turned into one of those creatures and they want to speak to John Smith.'
'John Smith?' The Doctor arched an eyebrow, it wasn't often that alien invaders asked for his alias. 'Fair enough, put them on.'
'Hang on I'll put you on speakerphone...' There was the noise of the phone being put down on a table, then a bleep before another voice roared down the line.
'JOHN SMITH!'
'You can call me the Doctor.' he replied sternly. 'And you are?'
'DO NOT PLAY GAMES. WE ARE THE FORGE.'
'Can't say I've had the pleasure...' the Doctor replied, looking at Professor Ryan who was looking incredibly confused by the Doctor's side of the conversation.
'YOU LOCKED THE FORGE IN A DIMENSIONAL PRISON. AND NOW YOU WILL SET US FREE.'
'I rather think I did that for a reason.' The Doctor replied, holding a hand up to silence Professor Ryan before he asked what was going on.
'WE KNOW HOW MUCH YOU CARE FOR YOUR FEMALE COMPANIONS'
'Let me guess...if I don't set you free you'll kill her? Hardly very original.' There was a sudden thud then the sound of mechanical whirring and building energy, the Doctor was suddenly worried.
'NO JOHN SMITH, WE WILL NOT KILL HER. WE WILL TRAP HER IN ANOTHER UNIVERSE, A PRISONER LIKE OUR PEOPLE. DO YOU HAVE ANY LAST WORDS FOR YOUR FRIEND?' The phone signal started to crackle and break up, no doubt a side-effect of the Speculum being powered up. He could just make out Anna's voice on the other end of the phone.
'Anna, Anna I'll get you back. I promise I'll get you back.' He yelled over the noise of the Speculum it became unbearable and he had to move the phone away from his ear, before there was another bang then nothing. 'Anna?'
'SHE IS GONE SMITH. NOW, SHALL WE MEET?'
'Not strictly true...' the Doctor muttered, stepping forward and peering inside. 'May I?'
Ryan nodded, indicating for him to step inside, the Doctor obliged.
