Part 5 – Arizona
***************************************************
Ann MacGregor explained the Time Tunnel process to the Doctor, while Samantha Carter looked on.
“Why would you let two men enter such an unstable system?” asked the Doctor.
“We didn’t. There was a Senator Clark who was threatening to cut off our funding at the time. Dr. Tony Newman, one of our younger scientists, impetuously decided to go through the Time Tunnel to prove its viability. He landed on the Titanic a day before it sank.”
“Oh I hate ending up on the Titanic,” he murmured to himself. “But wait, you said there were two men.”
“Yes, Dr. Doug Phillips followed him in a failed rescue attempt. After that, we only seemed to be able to transfer them between time periods. We could never get a precise enough time fix to bring them home.”
“Therefore, you couldn’t control the time vector,” the Doctor surmised.
“Exactly.”
“Well, we’ll need the exact time coordinates.”
“I can have the records sent here from Area 51.”
“No, your records are worthless, too imprecise. We need to make new measurements.”
“Off of what?”
“Off of the Time Tunnel’s temporal resonance waves,”
“The Time Tunnel was shut down years ago.”
“Are you sure you worked on time travel? You need to think more four-dimensionally.”
“Are you suggesting…” began Carter.
“Hello? Time Machine? For me, 1969 is just a few steps away” the Doctor said as he indicated the Tardis with his thumb over his shoulder. He turned to back to Ann MacGregor. I’ll need the location and layout of the Time Tunnel complex.”
“I remember the location in Arizona, and I’m sure General Landry can get access to the plans.”

They were all assembled in the conference room. The Doctor explained how he would go back in time and attempt to rescue the two scientists. All he needed when the plans for the layout of the Time Tunnel complex.
“Those plans are highly classified, just as classified as the Stargate. It’s going take some doing. I’ll obtain them on one condition. My SG1 team goes with you.”
“No, they won’t fit,” complained the Doctor. “Just look at the size of the Tardis. I can take Dr. MacGregor, but that’s all that will fit.” Landry just smiled in response.
“Funny, your friend Lethbridge-Stewart told me the Tardis was bigger on the inside than the outside. I believe he used the term ‘dimensionally transcendental’.”
“He always was a blabber-mouth. But your team has no experience with time travel,” The Doctor countered.
“Actually, we do,” interrupted Daniel Jackson. “Sam and I have even been to 1969, and preserved the timeline.” Landry just smiled.
“All right,” the Doctor groaned. “How soon can you get those plans?”
“Is this soon enough?” Landry asked as he pulled a data disk out of his pocket. It was the Doctor’s time to smile.
“You old dog, you.”
“OK, SG-1,” Landry announced “You have a go.”

Inside the Tardis, the Doctor, MacGregor and Carter were calculating the exact point to land the Tardis.
“What exactly do you do?” Jackson asked House, who was playing with his GameBoy.
“I’m an expert in infectious diseases and nephrology. My specialty is diagnostics. I even diagnosed the Doctor was an alien last week.”
“Really, but you seem like such an ass.”
“Oh, that’s because I am.”
“Why?”
“Oh, I suppose my father didn’t hug me enough,” he answered sarcastically. “And remind me, exactly what it is you do.”
“I’m an archeologist.”
“I don’t think there will be any ruins where we’re going.”
“My job description is a bit broader than that.”
“Hmmm.”
“What time was the final transfer of your lads?” the Doctor asked Dr.MacGregor.
“I remember the day, 23 April 1969. But I can’t remember the exact time.”
“Morning? Afternoon? Night?”
She nodded, unsure. “Days and nights just ran together, buried so deep.”
“Not to worry. We’ll materialize early in the day and monitor the situation.”
They agreed to materialize the Tardis in a seldom-used auxiliary service corridor beside the actual Tunnel structure. It was close enough to take readings, but unlikely to be discovered. MacGregor was amazed that the Doctor was able to tap into the Time Tunnel’s visual feed. She could actually see and hear Tony and Doug. They were in a general store in New England in 1978. Her eyes welled up. It was like they were alive again. The Doctor looked concerned.
“Where and when are they?”
“Cliffport, Maine, September 10, 1978.”
“Odd, I can get the Tunnel’s communications feed, but no temporal flux readings,” he said.
“They’re different systems with different algorithms,” Ann informed him. “All the temporal control systems use an inverted time encryption key.”
“I can’t get the temporal readings from inside the Tardis without that key.”
“It can be found on one the panels in the main control room. I could sneak out and read it.”
“No, we’re on the edge of a paradox as it is. We can’t risk you bumping into the young version of yourself.” That hadn’t occurred to her. Then, she realized that she could also see the now-dead General Kirk and Ray Swain, two of her best friends from her Time Tunnel days. She looked at the Tardis door, realizing she could change everything by going through the door, everything but restoring Tony and Doug.
“An SG-1 member could sneak out and read it,” offered Cameron Mitchell.
“I should go,” volunteered Carter.
“Actually, you would be easily noticed,” countered Ann MacGregor. “It’s 1969. They weren’t a lot of women on the project. I was one of the few.”
“If anyone’s doing any sneaking, it’ll be me,” said the Doctor, holding up his psychic paper. The Project Tic Toc logo suddenly appeared. “Wait here.”
“Um, just one moment,” Greg House called out.
“What?” asked the Doctor. Everyone expected another rude comment.
“You’re forgetting something.”
“What?”
“Oxygen.”
