I've heard the slang term "chav". I thought I knew what it meant. But now I'm not so sure.
Would my British friends please educate me?

I'm a bit hesitant to post this, because I don't really like talking about divisive things like "class", but it's a slang term for a type of "working class" person who has no taste, and dresses in a distasteful fashion (for some reason they seem to be associated with burberry), wears lots of trashy jewellery, watches trashy TV programmes, etc. I think the equivalent in your terms is "trailer trash". Sorry!

Thank you. So I take it Rose is not a chav. I think chav is relatively urban, whereas trailer park trash is more rural.
I find the burberry baseball caps quite funny. Odd how baseball caps are so popular in a country that doesn't have baseball.

i think some people would call Rose Tyler a chav. She was called one in New Earth, the first episode of the new season to be shown here. You're right, it is more of an urban thing. I don't know if you have an equivalent term for that.

You know, I was just about to ask the same question. No, I'm not sure we do have an equivalent in the U.S. for that term, but we certainly have plenty of people who fit the description. Interesting.
