The Doctor had sat himself down on the ground, cross legged as Styger sat, looking weak on a fallen tree. One of his fellow Sontarans was leaning forward, speaking conspiratorially. ‘How do you know we can trust the Doctor? He is a sworn enemy of the Sontarans.’
‘Silence Krier! The Doctor is also an enemy of the Rutans, therefore we have nothing to lose by informing him. He is, after all a Doctor, he may be able to assist us.’ Styger replied, dismissing Krier, who was sure his commanding officer was wrong in his inclusion of the Doctor. Given the chance, Krier was going to seize control of the mission. Styger had clearly lost his mind, he would deal with him and the Doctor once he saw the chance.
The Doctor watched Krier move off into the shade, knowing there was a degree of mistrust amongst Stygers men. He looked back at Styger who seemed to have regained his composure, rising to his feet slowly. ‘I think we should continue onward…the sky grows dark.’
Viebel was shaking his head. ‘There are no more safe spaces between here and the riverbed, up ahead lies the hunting ground of the jungles greatest predator. Darkness will fall before we cross it safely.’
‘Quiet savage!’ roared Krier. ‘The Sontarans are great warriors! A primitive predator creature is no match for our superior skills.’
The Doctor stayed seated. ‘There’s no argument that the Sontarans are great warriors…but your leader is sick.’ He looked at Styger who still did not look quite well enough. ‘Tell me Viebel how large is this predator?’
‘As large as the wingspan of a Krilton bird.’ Viebel replied.
The Doctor looked back at Krier. ‘I have a feeling that’s pretty big…fancy your chances with a sick commanding officer, a pacifist Timelord and a priest?’
Krier growled at the Doctor, reaching for his weapon. ‘If you will slow us down then you shall be left to die.’ He raised the gun. ‘Commander Styger is correct, we shall move on.’
The Doctor shrugged. ‘Okay but for your sake I hope a Krilton bird has the wingspan of a robin.’
Something stirred in the temple; its presence had not been required for many years. But now it sensed it was needed once more to protect the temple from hostile aliens. It readied itself, for the time was close at hand.
There was a vast field ahead of them, dotted with the blue and purple trees that were all across the jungle. The riverbank lay a couple of miles ahead, and the grass remained still in the breeze, no sign of any predators in the undergrowth. ‘We must tread lightly, carefully, the Morad can sense your movement.’ Viebel said, before moving down the hill slowly into the field.
The Doctor looked to the Sontarans and knew there was no chance of them treading lightly. He followed Viebel down the hill, the Sontarans close behind them. ‘What are you here for Styger? You’re obviously unwell…is it a cure?’
Krier grabbed the Doctor roughly and shoved him forward. ‘It is no concern of yours! If it were up to me, you would be lying slain in the village.’
The Doctor sighed. ‘Good job you’re not then…and I’d be dreadfully careful of your movements.’
‘If this predator appears, I shall feed you to it!’ spat Krier.
The Doctor kept moving, treading along the ground softly, considering removing his shoes once more, but with Krier growing agitated he thought it was probably better to keep moving. Viebel suddenly halted in the middle of the field, outstretching an arm. ‘Quiet…’ He looked to the ground, a pained look on his face. ‘It’s found us.’
‘How do you know?’ The Doctor asked, now looking to the ground.
‘The ground is shaking, the grass uprooted…’ Viebel looked back up at them all. ‘…if we split up maybe we can confuse it.’
Krier marched forward. ‘Noone leaves my sight!’ he roared, weapon raised. ‘You are stalling, trying to allow the Doctor to escape!’ He jabbed the gun into Viebel’s ribs. ‘Move!’ Viebel looked terrified, not by the gun, or indeed Krier. He was looking terrified by the large black tentacle that had risen up behind them, spikes suddenly jutting out from the centre. Another tentacle shot out of the ground behind Viebel, grabbing the Priest around the waist and raising him upward, just as a terrifying head with a blank pitch black face emerged from underneath the Doctor and the Sontarans, scattering them. It roared, baring thousands of needle-like teeth as the tentacle holding Viebel drew him to the blackness of the creature’s mouth.
