The Doctor had a headache, and a ringing in his ears. His vision wasn’t too great either, he could make out a blurry outline of a large black object with four legs staring down at him, he rubbed his eyes, and his vision became clearer. ‘The Morad…’ he sighed, as the creature roared, gnashing his thousands of needle like teeth and moving in on his prey. Suddenly, gunfire rang out behind him, and the Morad began lurching from side to side, unleashing a horrific groan as it was struck again and again, eventually it screamed one last time before falling to the ground. The Doctor turned to see a tall young man in a long camouflaged trenchcoat lowering his gun and offering him a hand. ‘Thank you…you’re not one of the locals are you?’
‘Pavel, of the Universal Conservationist Bureau…’
‘And yet you just murdered one of the planets inhabitants in its natural habitat….’ He looked at the young man who had a serious look on his face. ‘…not that I’m complaining! Make it a habit not to complain when someone saves your life.’ He beamed at him and outstretched a hand. ‘I’m the Doctor, pleased to meet you.’
There was a rustling behind them and two more people emerged in similar coats, an older looking man and one a similar age to Pavel.
‘Where did they go?’ The older man demanded, lowering a rifle from his shoulder and aiming it at the Doctor.
‘Who would that be then?’ the Doctor asked, mock innocence.
The older man jabbed the rifle into the Doctor’s stomach. ‘Don’t play dumb with me…the Sontarans, where are they?’
The Doctor pointed a thumb in the direction of the river. ‘That-a-way.’
Anna heard the door of the holding room open, she had been scrolling through the log for any misplaced entries for more recent events. Hearing movement outside, she looked around for a hiding place, seeing a couple of lockers in the corner of the room, she dashed across and pulled open the door of one, sending a rotting corpse crashing out on top of her. She screamed, throwing the body off her and noticing the name tag on the coat; Doctor Kurtz.
The Doctor felt more of a prisoner with the conservationist than he did with the Sontarans. He was being forced along by the older man who had yet to identify himself, the two younger men in front of them, weapons drawn. He knew that these three had no chance with the Sontarans, and did not want to get caught in the crossfire. They reached the riverbank, seeing the abandoned Sontaran ship, and the three Sontarans examining it. ‘You should let me talk to them, they’ll engage you in a battle. That’s what they do…fight, and they’re good at it. They’ll kill you.’
Kurtz shook his head and indicated for the Doctor to move forward. ‘The Sontarans are in direct contravention of the Listed Planets Act.’
The Doctor sighed, and kept moving. ‘I think that’s very, very far from their minds.’ They moved forward, weapons raised, the Doctor braced himself.
Anna looked down at the dead body, still shaking. She couldn’t remember if she had screamed, whoever was outside was still moving about, and she needed to hide. She pulled open another locker, and another body fell out. Anna was trembling now, and the door was opening, the mousy looking girl peering round into the room. ‘Oh…you’ve found Doctor Kurtz and Pavel…’
‘What…what the hell is going on here?’
The girl’s face twisted into a sick smile, and began glowing blue. ‘In a couple of minutes you shouldn’t need to worry.’
The Doctor found himself in the middle of the Conservationists and the Sontarans. Viebel was sitting on the ground, checking on his wound, completely confused by the presence of the strangers. ‘You’re conservationists! If you start firing, you’ll damage vegetation, maybe animals, that’s a contravention of the laws isn’t it?’ The Doctor pleaded, wanting desperately to avoid a fire fight.
Kurtz smirked. ‘It would be...’ He began. ‘…if we were from the Conservationist bureau.’ Kurtz and his two men began glowing blue, shimmering as they turned into something else. Soon enough, Kurtz and his men were no longer standing in front of the Doctor and the Sontarans, they had been replaced by three green gelatinous, spherical creatures, with several tendrils.
The Doctor’s face fell, Viebel stood up, remembering the stories his father had told. The Sontarans snarled. ‘Rutans!’
