The Doctor dived out of the way as the Sontarans opened fire, and a Rutan tendril shot out, morphing into a huge spike which narrowly avoided Styger’s chest. Krier struck one of the Rutans with a shot, and it retreated a couple of feet. Styger was dodging electric charges and another tendril which had this morphed into a whip, it lashed him across the arm, sending a shock jolting through his side. He moved behind the ship to recover, where the Doctor was waiting. ‘I swear I didn’t think they were…’
Styger raised a hand to silence him. ‘This is no time for babble Doctor.’ He began firing round the side of the spaceship.
The Doctor looked to Viebel who was crouched down by the riverbed, checking his wounds. ‘Are you alright?’
Viebel looked up at the Doctor, concerned. ‘I’m not healing as quickly as usual…’ A scream came from the other side of the ship, the Doctor and Styger darted round to see what was happening, the third Sontaran was hoisted up to the air, his chest impaled on a spike. Styger roared, and began firing on the Rutan holding his comrade, striking it again and again, the spike reverted back to a tendril, and the Sontaran fell to the ground, clutching his chest. The Rutans began retreating back into the bushes. The Doctor took the chance to run over to the fallen Sontaran, blood dribbling from chest.
‘Rix…can you move?’ Styger asked, kneeling down by his fallen comrade.
‘I think so Commander…’ he sat upright, hand to his chest; Styger helped him to his feet.
‘The Rutans will be after the data-print.’ Styger said to his two fellow Sontarans.
‘Data-print?’ ventured the Doctor, Krier flashed him a furious look, clearly believing he had led the Rutans to them on purpose.
Styger looked at the Doctor, and began coughing once more. ‘We cannot speak here Doctor, we must find cover, and then I shall tell you our reasons for being here.’
There had been gunfire outside; the Sontarans were nearing the temple. He knew he would have to act soon, he entered the chamber and began his preparations.
Anna didn’t have any time to be disgusted by the sight in front of her, as she leapt up on to the desk, as a tendril shot through the computer monitor, sending sparks flying everywhere. She didn’t think it would be too far to leap over the creature and out of the door. Taking a deep breath she dived off the desk, hitting the floor outside the room hard and rolling across it. She got to her feet and dusted herself down, breaking into a run down the corridor.
Styger, Viebel, Rix and the Doctor had found a small cave down by the river, opposite the temple which lay just a little further beyond the other side. Krier had decided to return to the abandoned Sontaran ship, he had been working on it for some time when, finally, the communications system came online, a high ranking Sontaran looking down at him. ‘This is Marshall Jaxrill, your ship has been out of commission for many years. State your purpose.’
Krier stepped forward. ‘Marshall, my name is Krier, I am on the planet Kreen with General Styger in search of the lost data-print.’
‘Progress?’
‘We are near to the location…however I do not believe Styger is up to the mission.’
‘Krier, you are young. General Styger is a celebrated hero of the Sontaran Rutan war, exactly why should I believe your word?’
Krier grinned thinly. ‘Because he has sided with an old enemy of our people; the Doctor.’
‘I must consult with the rest of the high command. I shall be in touch soon.’
‘The virus slowly dissolves our insides, turning our blood to Coronic acid…destroying us from within.’ Styger continued, the Doctor was listening, a grave look on his face. ‘Since the days of General Sontar; there has been legend of a yet greater Sontaran warrior who used his gene stock to build an army.’
The Doctor looked up, intrigued. ‘And it’s here on Kreen?’
‘For centuries the Sons of Sontar hid the data-print in a variety of locations, believing it a dangerous item that would undermine the integrity and strength of General Sontar.’ Styger paced the floor. ‘However, in these troubled times, the order has been given to track down this data-print and see if it holds the cure.’
‘The idea being that if it is truly the ultimate soldier, then he should be impervious to the virus?’ He sighed. ‘So I’m essentially helping the Sontarans build their master race?’
