Dr. Frank Morgan awoke with a start, hearing loud noises from within the base. He rubbed his eyes, and grabbed the dressing gown that was slung over the bedside table. Across the room, Pavel was already removing his pistol from the drawer in his own bedside table. 'Is that entirely neccesary?'
Pavel shrugged, then flashed him a grin. 'That's the visitor alarm, could be hostile. Always be prepared Doctor Morgan, always be prepared!'
Shaking his head, Morgan yawned and stretched and followed Pavel out of the room and into the hall. A fully dressed, unshaven and tired looking Doctor Kurtz beckoned for the two men to follow him into the observation room. 'The scanners confirm the ship is Sontaran.' He pressed a button bringing up a picture of a squat creature in black leather. 'They're a warlike race, so I imagine this planet has some strategic significance for them...of course we can't allow them to engage the natives.'
Pavel nodded. 'So what's our plan?'
'They landed by the river...Tann is trying to pinpoint their direction.' Kurtz replied, bringing up a map of the river and the surrounding area, ahowing three small dots moving away from a larger fourth dot.
Morgan leant forward to get a better look at the map. 'It looks like they're heading to the temple.'
'Okay, you and Pavel get to the temple...see if you can reason with these Sontarans.'
Pavel looked sceptical. 'And if we can't?'
Kurtz sighed. 'Improvise'
Anna hurried down the side of the river, looking for any sign of the Doctor or his alien friends. There was some movement in the darkness, she was about to call out, but realised it may not be the most sensible move. She crouched down and moved further towards the shadows. That was when she saw three more of the green blobs, and they were turning in her direction, tendrils outstretched, crackling with electricity.
The Doctor and Krier had stayed behind on the riverbank, as the boat was too small to carry all five of them. Styger, the wounded Rix and Viebel were now rowing across the river toward the temple. The Doctor turned to Krier, the uneasiness in him beginning to rise. 'So, how do you want to pass the time? Think I've got a deck of cards in here somewhere....' He dipped a hand into his trouser pocket and produced a packet of "Happy Families". He looked down at it, then back up at Krier then stuffed them back into his pocket. 'Probably too dark anyway...'
'All you do is talk and talk. You think it misleads your enemies but it only highlights your weaknesses.' Krier snarled.
'Fine then, didn't want to play anyway...' the Doctor snapped, suddenly hearing something nearby. He walked forward, and pulled back some of the branches to see the three Rutans off in the distance, and a figure he recognised as humanoid but couldn't quite make out any features. 'Krier!' he whispered, the Sontaran joined him. 'Your Rutan friends appear to still be on this side of the river.'
'Then we fight!'
Morgan and Pavel had arrived at the temple, after a long journey, there was no sign of the Sontarans, so they hurried inside. 'What do you find so fascinating about this place anyway Frank?' Pavel asked, producing his gun and looking around for the Sontarans, finding nothing.
'Come here I'll show you.' Morgan led Pavel through a maroon curtain that hung down to their left. Beyond the curtain was a large computer bank, with several monitors on each wall. 'You've seen the people of Kreen right? Do they strike you as the sort of people who have this sort of technology?'
Pavel's eyes widened. 'Well no...but, I mean, how do you know if it works?'
Morgan pressed a couple of buttons on one of the keyboards, and the bank lit up, bleeping and whirring as it came to life. He pointed Pavel to one of the monitors, which displayed an altar on which stood a large stone statue. He pushed another button, and the stone began glowing redder and redder until eventually it became dust.
'This, is one of the most advanced weapons systems I have ever come across. So what, exactly, do you think it's doing on a primitive jungle planet in an ancient temple?'
Pavel shrugged, then flashed him a grin. 'That's the visitor alarm, could be hostile. Always be prepared Doctor Morgan, always be prepared!'
