Yuck? Could you elaborate? Yuck: Noun yuck 1. (uncountable) something disgusting 2. (countable) the sound made by a laugh Interjection yuck! 1. uttered to indicate disgust usually toward an objectionable taste or odour My 'yuck' (not to be confused with 'yuk'!) was in response to the popular idea of 'cult TV shows'; an idea that I find extremely laughable. The word 'cult' should only be used for 'religious' groups that exist on the fringes of society not for TV shows as it implies that such shows are worshipped as new Gods (indeed some shows are; especially Science Fiction shows!) and that the viewers of such shows are mindless cretins (which indeed some may well be). 'Cults' more often than not lead to fanaticism which is almost always deadly. When I hear people calling superficial things like books, films, shows or plays 'cults' I feel somewhat sick; hence the 'yuck'. Star Trek and Monty Python are amongst my favourite shows however I don't worship them as cults and I don't think anyone else should as they are only unimportant 'objects' in our physical life that we will not need to care about when our life ends and we discover the meaning of life and see the afterlife. I do not believe that death is an end, merely the river (life) meeting the see (afterlife); life would be meaningless if death was the end and that seems illogical. We must all strive to break free from the prisons of 'society' and group mentality and face the process of individuation. Individuality is man's greatest treasure. The deification of TV shows, books etc... is one of the bricks in the wall that we must smash. We can like the shows but we shouldn't comnsider them 'cults'; it is bad enough that fans of TV shows get given names like 'Whovians', 'Bondians', 'Holmesians' (or 'Sherlockian'!) etc. Accepting these farcical titles is conforming (something I consider dangerous for the most part).

Does this mean I should disassemble my TARDIS altar? ;D
Thank you for your elaboration. I tend to think of the word cult in this context as meaning being in favour of and having a strong following, whether or not it conforms to expectations of the society.
Certainly no one should worship any of these shows. And I agree in a religious context, the word cult has a much more specific and rigid meaning. However, this wouldn't be the first time the specific definition of a word was expanded by a culture.
Would you like to suggest an alternate title to "General Cult TV"?

Does this mean I should disassemble my TARDIS altar? ;D Only if it isn't a shrine to Jon Pertwee! Thank you for your elaboration. I tend to think of the word cult in this context as meaning being in favour of and having a strong following, whether or not it conforms to expectations of the society. And you are quite free to think that. The word 'cult' is used for numerous things; I dislike this because it is a perversion of the correct meaning of 'cult'. Certainly no one should worship any of these shows. And I agree in a religious context, the word cult has a much more specific and rigid meaning. However, this wouldn't be the first time the specific definition of a word was expanded by a culture. Would you like to suggest an alternate title to "General Cult TV"? Indeed it wouldn't be the first time; the meaning of words seem to change every generation! 'Cool' means good and 'Hot' means attractive. Using the word 'cult' is still in my opinion most odd and a brick in the wall that is group mentality. Instead of simply being a fan of a show, people are cultist like 'Whovians' or 'Bondians'; social groups block individuality. Now we have these creatures called 'Charvers', they all dress the same and try to act the same which is frustrating and painful to see. An alternative name for 'General Cult TV '? You don't need to change it nor did I wish you to. My anger at cult TV shows was not meant to be aimed at the members of this board as they are forced to conform to 'society'. Because others call certain TV shows cult TV shows we sadly must conform; we have been forced to call these shows cult TV shows so, so long that we cannot really think of a better name for them (TV Shows For Select Fans?). Obviously we must all conform to an extent or we may be murderers or rapists however groups like Whovians, Bondians etc are attacks on individuality and the wall blocking separating us from individuation. The one title I don't mind as much is 'Bohemian' if it is used to mean an individual (or someone actually from Bohemia!).
