The journey to the barrow had been uneventful Samuels had not spoken a word, Maybury had tried to make conversation but it had been no use and he had given up in the end. Samuels got out of the car and made his way over to the burial mound, he stopped at the entrance and turned to Maybury saying
“Right I want these wooden planks removing from the entrance. Come on Reverend we need to work fast here”
“The burial mound was boarded up for a very good reason you know, it was deemed a dangerous structure, I don’t think we should be putting ourselves in harms way by going inside” Maybury explained.
“When I want your opinion I shall ask for it! Now please do as I say, you know what will happen if you refuse to help me!” Samuels insisted.
Maybury knew that he would end up being killed if he didn’t cooperate. He started pulling at the planks of wood, they came away quite easily, they were rotten with being constantly exposed to the elements. When the last one had been removed he peered into the gloom of the tunnel, he switched on a torch and was just about to walk inside when he noticed Samuels was stood looking off into the distance he was mumbling something
“Interfering fools. The treasure is not yours to find I shall not permit you to approach the barrow” he uttered viciously.
“What are you doing Mr Samuels come on I thought you were in a hurry to enter the burial chamber?” Maybury asked impatiently.
“We were about to have a couple of visitors, but I’ve seen to it that they will not be arriving at the barrow any time soon not unless they want a long walk. Lead the way if you please Reverend” Samuels replied.
The tunnel wasn’t very long and they were soon in the chamber, as Maybury shone his torch on the walls he saw they seemed to be stained with red, he shuddered whatever it was he hoped it wasn’t blood. The beam of the torch rested on a bulky object covered in a dust sheet Samuels smiled
“Good I hoped we would find it here, Give me a hand Reverend we need to get it uncovered I must invoke the correct incantations” he said.
Corporal Bell informed Yates that the meeting he had wanted arranging was to be held at 2pm in his office.
“Thanks Corporal Bell that will give me enough time to carry out a bit of detection work. This pass might come in handy it’ll get me into the MOD building I think” Yates said.
“If Major Delgaudio should ask where you are sir, what should I tell him?” Corporal Bell asked.
“Tell him I’m carrying out a special audit over in Supplies. He’s so wrapped up in his paperwork he won’t bother to check up to see if I’m there. But in case he decides to snoop I’m sure you can come up with some other excuse for my absence. Ask Sergeant Benton to keep an eye on things until I get back” Yates replied.
He drove over to the MOD Local HQ building in nearby Addlestone, he was stopped at the main gate by two sentries, he showed them his pass and told them General Lowery had asked him to pick up some important papers he needed for his meeting at the Ministry which he had forgotten to take with him. The sentries were satisfied with Yates’ explanation as to why he was there and swung the barrier open. Yates calmly drove the Land Rover into the car park. Once inside the building he asked a Corporal where Lowery’s office was and quickly went inside, he started searching through cabinets and drawers looking for something, anything that would give him a clue as to where the Brigadier was. Over in the corner of the office was a floor safe Yates smiled safe breaking had been part of his basic training when he joined UNIT, so he set about unscrambling the combination, it didn’t take long before the safe door swung open there were lots of papers inside Yates riffled through them, he found a file with the Brigadier’s name on it and opened it. He heard voices and footsteps approaching the office, he spotted a door at the far end of the office and dashed through it, hoping that he wasn’t about to be discovered, he held the door slightly ajar and listened……..
