Alice and the Master were half way to the barrow when the car suddenly came to a halt, Alice turned the ignition key to try and restart the engine but it was no use, she got out and opened the bonnet, peering in to the engine compartment she couldn’t see anything wrong.
“I don’t know what’s the matter with the stupid thing, why should it suddenly break down like that, I mean nothing seems amiss under the bonnet!” she fumed.
The Master took a look under the bonnet and nodded “Even the internal combustion engine is not immune from external energy forces. If you look carefully Doctor Cornelius you will notice that the battery leads have melted, interesting nothing else has been damaged. Oh well nothing like a good brisk walk to get the old hearts pumping” he said.
Alice saw that the battery leads were twisted and fused together, she slammed the bonnet down and hurried after the Master, who had disappeared from view, she ran to catch him up. When she was at his side she breathlessly said
“What could have caused something like that, I’ve never seen anything like it before, surely we would have been affected by an energy source, we’d have lost consciousness or something wouldn’t we?”
"They whoever they are sensed we were on our way to the barrow, they don’t want to harm us, at least not yet, all they are interested in for the moment is preventing us from reaching the barrow! We have to tread very carefully Doctor Cornelius a being that can project energy using its mind is very powerful indeed.” the Master explained.
“You know who we are dealing with then?” Alice continued.
“No not really, although I have one or two ideas. If my intuition is right then something evil has arrived in Devil’s End and we are going to need all our skill and cunning to deal with it” the Master concluded turning briskly on his heel and continuing on his way.
But Alice didn’t move she felt as if she couldn’t take another step “I can’t go any further, I have a feeling that something terrible is going to happen. It’s no good I can’t go on” she said.
The Master sighed. “I won’t force you to continue to the barrow my dear but your mind is strong enough to ignore such feelings. Concentrate on the fact that there is great danger in Devil’s End and the villagers need our help. Come on, you’ve come this far, don’t give up now” he said. It was no use trying to hypnotise Alice her mind was too stubborn to control so the Master was going to have to rely on his powers of persuasion.
“Here take my hand, I won’t let any harm befall you, I give you my word” the Master insisted. Alice grasped firmly hold of the Master’s hand and they set off up a steep incline towards the barrow. There still seemed a strange sense of foreboding in the air but not as bad as it had been before, Alice began to relax a little bit she somehow felt safe with the Master although she couldn’t work out why since he was probably as evil as whatever this being was that had arrived in Devils’ End she just hoped this wasn’t some elaborate trap and that the Master wouldn’t be joining forces with the being, she put the thought quickly to the back of her mind.
Miss Hawthorne was wondering what Rod Marlowe was so nervous about and why he wanted to talk to her about the church as she picked some herbs from her garden. She walked over to a large lavender bush intent on cutting a few sprigs when she jumped back with a start, there staring over the garden wall was a grotesque figure with red eyes but in an instant it was gone. Miss Hawthorne dashed out into the lane but there was nothing to see, she felt sure she wasn’t imagining things but she couldn’t be sure, it could have been her mind playing tricks on her, she’d been feeling tired lately, she shook her head there certainly was something strange happening again in Devil’s End she had seen the signs in her Crystal Ball and then there was the incident with the book where the pages had turned over by themselves she hadn’t imagined that. That settled it after she had seen Mr Marlowe she intended to have a look round the church, she wouldn’t let herself be put off by Reverend Maybury or anybody else……..
