Major Delgaudio was in the Supplies Stores a look of frustration on his face, Captain Yates was nowhere to be see. Benton stood nervously to attention, he had done everything he could to stall him but it was no use there was nothing more he could say or do to stop Delguadio from asking where Yates was.
“Did you think for one minute Sergeant that just because I’m busy sorting out paperwork that I’d be too preoccupied to bother about what else is going on!” Delguadio boomed.
“No sir of course not! May be we just missed him sir I’ll go and check to see if he’s back in his office, perhaps he forgot something?” Benton explained.
Delguadio shook his head “I appreciate your loyalty to Captain Yates but you do realise Sergeant Benton that I could very easily have your stripes for insubordination since it’s quite obvious that the Captain has gone out. However I’m only here for a short period of time and I don’t want to start making enemies. I’m sure Captain Yates has his reasons for leaving HQ, I’ll speak to him about it when he returns. In the meantime no more lies Sergeant please. Now go on about your duties, I have some phone calls to make” he replied.
Benton saluted. He went back into the HQ building and straight to Corporal Bell who was busy typing she looked up from the typewriter and smiled.
"Did Captain Yates say he could be contacted whilst he’s out?” Benton began.
Corporal Bell frowned “No he just asked that we cover for him. Has something happened Sergeant Benton?”
“Major Delguadio knows the Captain isn’t here, looks like we might be in a load of trouble, he’s already threatened me with demotion. Don’t say a word Corporal, especially about this afternoon’s meeting and……..”
Benton didn’t finish his sentence before Delguadio appeared, he was heading for his office. “I’ve nearly finished that inventory you asked for Major!” Corporal Bell called.
“Thank you Corporal Bell, bring it through when it’s ready!” Delguadio replied as he opened the door to his office, he slammed it quickly shut and picked up the telephone
“I want an urgent call put through to General Lowery’s office!” he barked into the receiver.
Yates heard somebody coming in to General Lowery’s office, there were two different voices, he listened intently to what they had to say from the safety of his hiding place.
“The General said he wants everything ready for this evening, you’d better start organising things. Here’s the file you wanted now get busy” the first voice said. The other voice belonged to a woman she sounded nervous
“Thank you sir, I’ll make a start right away! Sir may I ask why General Lowery is visiting……….” The voices faded away as the two people left the office. Yates sighed with relief. Before leaving the inner room he flicked the light switch on, the room seemed empty except for a tatty looking desk he wandered over to it and opened one of the drawers nothing much was inside a few items of stationery, something rolled to the front of the drawer it was a black candle. Yates quickly closed the drawer picked up the file he had taken from the safe that was about the Brigadier and hurried back out to the Land Rover, he put the file on the passenger seat and backed out of his parking place. He stopped to show the sentries his pass, they raised the barrier and he was on his way. Half a mile from UNIT HQ there was a rather steep country lane, the Land Rover began to pick up speed, Yates stomped on the brake pedal to slow the Land Rover down but nothing happened, he tried again but it was no use the brakes wouldn’t respond as a hedgerow hurtled towards him he tried the brake pedal one last time…….
