Maybury nervously stepped back a few paces when the dust sheet was pulled back.
“But I don’t understand this, this statue was destroyed in the explosion how can it be here” he stammered.
Samuels smiled “He was removed to a safe place moments before the church was destroyed. Any way he is not a statue. Watch carefully Reverend!”
Samuels bowed his head and mumbled a few strange sounding words, Maybury watched in astonishment as chunks of stone began to crumble away from the statue, what was revealed underneath the stone veneer looked very much like skin. When all the stone was in pieces on the ground there was a shrieking noise and as Maybury tried shrinking further back into the shadows two malevolent glowing red eyes seemed to be floating towards him, he covered his face
“Nooooooo please nooooooo!” he began.
Samuels shouted “Bok no! We need Reverend Maybury, he is friend not foe. Return to the village and wake the rest of your brethren then conceal yourselves in the cavern and await further instructions from me!”
Bok stopped he looked at Maybury he turned and headed out of the barrow, his wings made a swishing noise as he took to the air and headed back towards Devil’s End.
“Reverend Magister animated that gargoyle the last time but it was only ever made out of stone. How can it now be flesh and blood, that’s an impossibility!” Maybury continued.
“Bok has always been flesh and blood. The stone veneer was a very clever disguise! I decided I needed a spy to keep an eye on what Mr Magister was up to. Give me a hand to clear some of this rubble away Reverend, we need to uncover the alcove in order to get to the artefacts!”
“Somebody will see Bok and they’ll know something is going on!”
Samuels shook his head “Stop fussing Elijah please! Bok has the ability to make himself invisible. Look shine your torch over here I think this is the right spot”
Maybury was torn between helping Samuels uncover these artefacts and rushing back to Devil’s End to warn the villagers about the arrival of Bok, he wasn’t happy at the thought of something flying around causing mayhem especially when it was out of his control, but if the little gargoyle could indeed make himself invisible then who would believe him other then Miss Hawthorne but most people thought she was round the twist anyway and never listened or believed a word she said. He decided to continue the excavation work at the barrow, he must try and bide his time, this Samuels chap wasn’t going to have things all his own way.
Corporal Jennings paced up and down Honeysuckle Cottage he was getting more and more agitated, the phone kept on ringing and each time he answered it there was still nothing but the crackling sound of static on the line. He went upstairs to check on the patient who was still sound asleep Then Jennings heard a noise it sounded as though something had landed on the roof, he picked up his rifle and ran outside. Up the roof clinging to the chimney stack was a small figure with red eyes it grinned wickedly at Jennings, Jennings aimed his rifle and took a shot at it, the bullet rattled the chimney pot and sailed over the roof landing somewhere in the front garden. There was no sign of the figure, Jennings shook his head and ran back inside, he picked the phone up and was about to dial a number when he heard the sound of glass breaking, again picking up his rifle he went to investigate…….
