Samuels was studying the artefacts that he had brought back from the burial mound. There were three objects a silver goblet, a very ornate dagger and some sort of golden talisman on a long chain, he was trying to ignore Maybury who seemed to be getting uptight about something.
“Somebody is bound to notice the gargoyles have gone, what do I say if anybody starts asking questions!” Maybury worried.
Samuels put the talisman around his neck “This is the actual talisman worn by Reverend Magister, placed inside the burial mound for safe keeping after Magister was arrested! Oh for goodness sake Reverend will you stop worrying if any of the villagers ask about the gargoyles say they have had to go back to the Stonemasons for some additional work” he replied, the irritation clear in his voice.
Maybury decided not to test Samuels patience any further “So now you have the artefacts what is it that you intend to do with them?” he asked.
“Wait and see Reverend, wait and see! A meeting is to be held in the Cavern tonight at midnight which will begin with an initiation ceremony, you my dear Elijah will be one of the guests of honour. Now I am sure there is something you have to be getting on with. I have some calls to make if you will excuse me”
Maybury nodded he left the study but decided to see if he could eaves drop on Samuels’ conversation he stood at the door listening.
Miss Hawthorne was seething with rage, she brandished her umbrella at the Master and boomed “You, how dare you show your face around here again. Mr Marlowe call the police at once tell them there is an escaped prisoner on the loose”
“Now hold on Miss Hawthorne this is Professor Torres and his colleague Doctor Cornelius from the University of Bath they are doing a survey up at the barrow” Marlowe protested.
“Out of my way Mr Marlowe I’ll call the police myself, give me that telephone!” Miss Hawthorne continued
The Master took gently but firmly hold of Miss Hawthorne’s arm, and made her sit down “Miss Hawthorne please my dear lady calm yourself, here drink some of this brandy. I’m afraid there is no point in trying to call the police I think you will find that all the telephones here in the village are out of order knocked out by an energy surge. It seems our visitor wants to isolate this village from the outside world, well that would make sense, he doesn’t want to draw attention to himself, well not for the time being anyway” he said.
Miss Hawthorne sipped some brandy “You mean, you mean you’re not behind the strange goings on here this time!” she gasped.
The Master shook his head “I came back to investigate an enormous energy surge up at the barrow, the energy released means that someone has arrived and that someone intends to destroy this village and everybody in it unless we can stop them”
“My car broke down on the way to the barrow for no apparent reason and we found a dust sheet and some stone with pieces of skin attached to it inside the burial mound. Look I know it’s difficult to trust him but we haven’t got anybody else to help us at least give him a chance” Alice added.
Miss Hawthorne sighed “You don’t know him like I do Doctor Cornelius but I will go along with things for now! There are strange creatures lurking around the village, one was staring at me from over my garden wall then it simply vanished”
“Yes and the four gargoyles on the church tower have gone, that’s what I wanted to talk to you about Miss Hawthorne! I think we had better speak to Reverend Maybury and try and find out what’s going on I mean…….” Marlowe said, Miss Hawthorne interrupted him
“It’s all starting up again isn’t it! I don’t like Reverend Maybury but perhaps paying him a visit would help!” she said. As she got up from the chair she had been sitting in her legs gave way and she collapsed, the Master swiftly caught her and supporting her weight sat her back in the chair.
“We shall need the talisman of mercury and some of my herbs if we are to do battle and win!” she whispered.
“Look after her Doctor Cornelius! I’ll go and speak to Reverend Maybury! Keep the door locked Mr Marlowe and don’t open it for anybody or for any reason. I shall return shortly!” said the Master
As the Master approached the Rectory a gust of wind whipped up and he found himself battling to continue on his way……
