Delguadio began to feel nauseous as they reached the outskirts of Covenstone, he told Yates to stop the Land Rover, he got out and leaned heavily on the door.
“I’m sorry Captain I don’t feel as though I can go any further. I have a sudden feeling of terrible foreboding” Delguadio explained.
Yates looked around the village every thing seemed normal if a little quiet.
“Well there doesn’t seem to be much happening, everything seems alright. I’ll go and see which one of those cottages is Honeysuckle Cottage, you can wait here sir if you prefer” Yates replied.
Delguadio shook his head, he was a soldier and he had a job to do, whatever the feeling of foreboding was he had to ignore it. “No Captain it’s alright I’ll come with you. We’d better keep our wits about us though!” he said, quickly drawing his revolver and following Yates towards the row of cottages.
General Lowery saw Yates and Delguadio heading towards the cottage, there was no sign of the Brigadier inside the cottage it looked as though he had climbed out of the bedroom window jumped on to the flat roof of the garage and disappeared into the overgrown back garden. Lowery decided to follow. It was a good job he had parked his car on the lane at the back of the cottages he didn’t want to be discovered by UNIT he thought to himself.
The Brigadier’s head was still swimming with the after affects of the sedative he had been given, he need to stay focussed on getting back to UNIT HQ, he fought his way through thick brambles until he reached a wooden gate, with a bit of force he managed to open it, a blackened shape fell through the gate and into the garden, it was Corporal Jennings, he had been very badly burned.
“General Lowery he’s not who he say he is! The devil is coming he’s here, must warn must warn….” he gasped. The Brigadier felt for a pulse but the poor chap had slipped away.
“Don’t worry Corporal I intend to get to the bottom of all this! I’ve had my suspicions about General Lowery for a while now!” the Brigadier said. He laid Jennings' body gently on the grass and continued on through the gate. The gate led out onto a little narrow lane where a car was parked, the Brigadier rushed over to it he discovered the keys were still in the ignition, he started the engine and sped away.
General Lowery watched the car disappearing into the distance he smiled “So you think you can get away do you Brigadier, well we’ll soon see about that. Nobody will ever believe your fantastic story about what you have seen, they’ll put it down to pressure of work.” He turned back towards the cottage and closed his eyes.
Yates and Delguadio made a thorough search of the cottage and found nothing, not even evidence that anybody had ever been there. As they headed back towards the hallway, there was a loud creaking groaning noise and they were showered by a cascade of plaster dust from the ceiling
“Sir I think we had better get out of here! It seems as though this whole place is collapsing in on itself, some sort of entropy the Doctor would call it!” Yates began.
Delguadio looked up at the ceiling where huge cracks were beginning to appear the same thing was happening to the walls and the floorboards. They both dashed out of the door, Yates saw that even cracks were beginning to appear in the garden, Delguadio slipped and fell, he felt himself sliding backwards towards the jaws of an ever widening chasm………..
