Yates grabbed hold of Delguadio’s arm and with a great effort managed to pull him out of the chasm and back on to firmer ground, although it wouldn’t remain that way for very long as cracks were beginning to appear all over the place.
“Come on sir it’s time we weren’t here, let’s get back to the Land Rover!” Yates shouted.
As they ran back to the Land Rover Yates noticed that the cottages and the post office were starting to vanish, it seemed into thin air. In their place were two cottages and a rather run down looking farmhouse.
“What on earth has happened, how can a village just disappear? Covenstone exists it’s on all the maps!” Delguadio began.
Don’t ask me to explain but obviously what we were seeing didn’t exist. The two cottages and the farmhouse which we can see now is obviously the real Covenstone! I think we had better get back to UNIT HQ” Yates said.
“You were anxious to find the Brigadier, why the sudden change of heart?” Delguadio continued.
“The Brigadier’s not here, he wasn’t in Honeysuckle Cottage, either he’s been taken elsewhere or he’s managed escaped” Yates continued.
Delguadio shook his head “Thanks for rescuing me from that chasm, I didn’t think I’d make it!” he said.
Yates started the Land Rover up “I couldn’t leave you to die could I! Will you allow me to organise some search parties to go and look for the Brigadier, we’ll include all the villages in the surrounding area!”
“What oh yes that’s a good idea Captain Yates!” Delguadio said, seeming somewhat distracted. They hadn’t driven very far, when Delguadio grabbed the steering wheel and said “Devil’s End we must go to Devil’s End!” The Land Rover began to swerve all over the place and Yates had to fight to control it. Lowery watched what was happening for a few minutes then the air shimmered and he disappeared.
The Brigadier arrived back at UNIT HQ much to the surprise of everyone there. The effects of the sedative had completely worn off and he was back to his usual self.
Sir, glad to see you’re alright! Captain Yates and Major Delguadio went over to Covenstone to look for you, I thought they would have returned by now!” Benton began.
“Not to worry Benton, I’m sure they will be back here any time now, we’ll give them a little bit longer. Right well I’m going to phone the Ministry and have a word with them about General Lowery!” replied the Brigadier, hurrying towards his office, there was a visitor in his office a tall figure with a cruel smile
“Ahh my dear Brigadier come in and sit down, congratulations on your escape, now then I think it’s time we dealt with this situation once and for all don’t you!” the figure said closing the door………….
