I saw that George Takei, who played Sulu on Star Trek, has announced that he is gay.
I honestly have two reactions. The first is to laugh, and start thinking of jokes. (Hey Chekov, want to see my Photon Torpedo? ;D). Not there's anything wrong with being gay.
The second reaction is a question: Why announce it with a press conference? Why do certain celebrities insist on sharing their sexual preferences with the public, as if it's important news?

Not particularly shocking news this. I think the reasoning behind celebrity press conferences for this kind of thing is usually one of two things. Firstly it can happen because a 'newspaper' is going to print a story about it and the celebrity just wants to get there first so they can tell their side. Secondly there are still a lot of people out there who think that being homosexual is an affront to God/evil and wrong/whatever reason they want to concoct to justify themselves and if someone they've seen on their TV's and cinema screens for years comes out then some of the people might think that "Hey. Sulu's gay. We like Sulu. Maybe we were wrong." These are obviously very shallow people, easily swayed kids or just idiots, but if it works... Of course it could be the third option. George is facing the inevitability of life and doesn't particulary need to hide who he is for work now. It might be a great relief to not have to hide it anymore.

No, No, it's a great misunderstanding. He said, he was "Gray". I assume it was a reference to his advanced age. ;D Actually, I liked his swashbuckling episode where he was running around without his shirt on. I thought he was hot. Damn. Thank god, Roger wasn't gay.
