Today is the anniversary of the first day of the Battle of Teutoburg. In A.D. 9, Rome's power extended into the borderland regions of Germania. A group of Germanic tribes formed one federation under the Cherusci led by Arminius (probably Ermunaz in Proto-Germanic), an ex-Roman soldier. These freedom fighters defeated and destroyed the three legions, Legio XVII, Legio XVIII, and Legio XIX) six cohorts of auxiliary troops and three alae (cavalry) squadrons at the Teutoburg woods (modern day Kalkriese). The outcome of the battle set the boundaries of the Roman empire until its fall in the west, as no Roman expansions crossed the Rhine after the defeat at the hands of Arminius, whom freed his people from Roman imperialism and became the king of the Germanic people. The Roman imperator Augustus, after hearing of the defeat, famously cried out ''Quintili Vare, legiones redde!" (''Quinctilius Varus, give me back my legions!). Perhaps the greatest consequence of Arminius's victory over the Romans is the fact that English has become the international language rather than Latin. Attachments:

Perhaps the greatest consequence of Arminius's victory over the Romans is the fact that English has become the international language rather than Latin. Aren't there several "international" languages. Isn't French the language of diplomacy, while English is the language of commerce?

Well, English is the language of international communication mostly; good examples of the importance of English are India and the Philipines where different linguistic groups use English to communicate with eachother.
Infact, if it wasn't for the battle and the victory of the Cherusci and their allies, English or England wouldn't actually exist and we would not be talking in this thread.
