The Doctor arrived at the Kirkyard to find the gates locked, peering through the bars, he could see Constable Norrie dozing off on the front step. Perhaps he had leapt to the wrong conclusion but it seemed to much of a coincidence not to be connected with the Cybermen. Producing the sonic screwdriver he aimed it at the iron gates, sending them flying open, which awoke Norrie. 'Who the....it's you again!'
The Doctor beamed, pocketing the screwdriver and marching towards the Constable, hand outstretched. 'The Doctor yes, and I've come to help you with your stakeout.' The Doctor noticed the blank look on the Constable's face as he bemusedly shook his hand. 'Help you protect the graveyard from resurrectionists Constable! Although....' he trailed off, hands in the pockets of his trousers, overcoat tails flapping in the cold Edinburgh winds as he walked towards an open grave. '...I may be a little late.'
'How did they get past me?' Norrie spluttered, looking at the four open graves before him.
The Doctor crouched down and picked up some earth, looking at it in the moonlight, before tossing it back in the hole. 'Moonboots and pressure suits. The Cybermen can be quite quiet if they have to be....' The Doctor stood up, leant forward to Norrie and whispered. 'And so can I.'
'Look...Doctor, what in the world are you talking about?'
Norrie saw The Doctor grimace, indicating for him to be quiet, as four silver giants, glittering in the light of the moon appeared behind him. The Doctor only realised when he saw Norrie's face drop. 'We are witnessed.'
The Doctor spun round to face the four Cybermen. 'Yes you are, first in the Vaults and now here in the Kirkyard, what are your plans here?'
The Cybermen levelled arm mounted blasters at the Doctor and the Constable. 'I'd run if I were you Constable!' roared the Doctor as he turned, grabbing the young officer by the arm and taking him along as they ran through the kirkyard, Cybermen following close behind.
Anna Talbot was still looking down on the city when the doors to her cell slid open and a Cyberman entered, carrying a very frightened looking man. He placed him on the floor on the opposite end of the room. 'Conversion process a failure.' the Cyberman said to seemingly noone in particular. It turned and exited the room as suddenly as it had entered.
Anna waited for the doors to close before approaching the curled up figure. 'Hello? Are you alright?' she placed a hand on the shoulder. 'Hello?' He rolled over to reveal a battered and bloody face with a Cyberman eyepiece over the right eye. He gasped, as if coming back to life then began wheezing.
'Jo....Joseph....' he gasped, sitting upright.
Anna crouched down so that she was eye level, though he kept avoiding eye contact, looking around the room, clearly panicked. 'My name's Anna. Do you know where we are?'
'Joseph....' the man repeated.
'Who's Joseph? A friend?' Anna asked, trying to get something, anything from this strange man.
'Joseph Fairfax.' he gulped, finally coming round. 'A very old friend....he wrote to me about bringing a man back from the dead.'
'Yeah I've met your old friend, that's how I ended up here.' She outstretched a hand. 'My name's Anna....'
The man took her hand and shook it. 'Professor Martin Doyle....'
The face of Anna Talbot looked back at the Cyberleader from a screen in the control deck of the Cybership. 'Excellent. Doyle has made contact with the Doctor's companion. He will extract the information we require then he will eliminate her.'
The Doctor and Constable Norrie were crouched under a wall as the Cybermen searched the darkened kirkyard. 'The Cybermen have positioned squads here, and in the Vaults. There must be some logical reason for that....'
'What are those things Doctor? Giant metal men with...horrible blank faces.'
'Cybermen.' the Doctor whispered in reply. 'And their presence here in Edinburgh is very dangerous for the future of mankind. There must be something they want nearby....' He peered over the wall, couldn't see the Cybermen but did catch sight of the answer to his question. '...of course Constable Norrie! What would any invading force want to capture?' He pointed to Edinburgh Castle looming over them from the Castle Rock, an extinct volcano right in the centre of the city. 'We need to warn them.'
'Will there be anything else sir?'
Joseph Fairfax shook his head as he locked the doors of his laboratory. 'No thank you Crowley, I apologise for keeping you awake for so long, I needed to make the final preparations for tomorrow.'
Both men made their way down the hallway towards their respective rooms. 'I require a call at six, I need to give myself enough time to get appropriately dressed and go over my presentation, after all Crowley, it's not often you bring your world changing creations to see the King is it?'
The Doctor beamed, pocketing the screwdriver and marching towards the Constable, hand outstretched. 'The Doctor yes, and I've come to help you with your stakeout.'
