Anna felt the ship jerk back to life, sending her rocking back on her heels. 'We're on the move...' she muttered to herself, making her way to the porthole at the other end of her cell. She could see they were moving across the city, but where to? She glanced over to Doyle, still inactive since his line of questioning had hit a brick wall. Was he really trying to get information from her for the Cybermen or had she become paranoid? She decided she couldn't take the risk and decided to still treat him with a degree of suspicion. She had to escape, maybe she could use Doyle to her advantage?
'The Cybermen must be initiating the next stage of their plans, they can probably no longer afford to have us alive. They'll be back here to kill us any minute, we need to run Martin...'
Doyle shook his head. 'No, leave me here madam....I don't have much longer.'
'Oh no you don't!' She knelt down and placed his arm over her shoulder, lifting his frail, partially converted body to its feet. 'No man left behind Professor Doyle!' With that, Anna raised her boot and slammed it against the door, no luck, not that she really expected a boot to the door to yield any results. But perhaps she had got the attention of a Cyberman patrolling the corridor outside, if she could just overpower it...
After a few minutes, nothing seemed to happen, they were clearly on the command deck preparing their next move. Anna sighed, looking around the room for any vents or openings, nothing except the porthole and she didn't much like the idea of leaping out of a window a few hundred of miles above the streets of Edinburgh. She sat back down, easing Doyle down with her. 'Come on Doctor...enough's enough.'
The Cybership was beginning its landing procedures, the Doctor watched for a few seconds as it lowered down towards the Castle esplanade before turning on his heel and hurrying back up the drawbridge into the Castle, McCallum and Norrie following close behind. 'Doctor what're ye doing?'
The three men passed a number of soldiers, rushing out to see what the commotion was. The Doctor weaved through them all, his destination clear in his mind. 'Where are we going Doctor?' Norrie asked, trying to attract the Timelord's attention.
They were making their way to the Half Moon Battery now, where a large cannon was positioned, looking out across the city below. The Doctor stopped by it, waved away the two soldiers keeping a watch on it and produced his sonic screwdriver, loosening the bolts so he could swing it round and position it at the landing Cybership. He turned back to the soldiers and indicated for them to load the cannon, they looked to McCallum for clarification, the Major just nodded his head.
'Would you like to tell me what it is you're planning Doctor?'
The Doctor produced a pocket watch from the inside pocket of his coat. 'I make it about 12:58am....we're about to fire Edinburgh Castle's very first One O'clock gun Major!' He beamed, looking up at the Cybership.
Anna was looking out the porthole now, and could see Edinburgh Castle growing larger beneath her. If she knew the Doctor, he was down there, disrespecting the authority of whichever military man was in charge and coming up with an audacious scheme to send the Cybermen packing. 'Oh.' she muttered, suddenly realising what this meant.
'One alien lifeform below Leader.'
'Excellent. It must be the Doctor.' The Cyberleader rose from the command chair, clenching his fist. 'Prepare weapons systems, target the Castles defences.'
The Cybermen on the command deck began following their orders, firing up the ships weaponry, aiming it at the numerous batteries around the Castle housing primitive cannons.
'Now that we have the Doctor and the Castle at our mercy, the female can be eliminated.'
Anna was still looking out of the porthole when she heard something click and whirr behind her, turning to face the source of the noise, she was face to face with Doyle who was rolling up his shirt sleeve to reveal a thin silver tube grafted on to the side of his arm. If Anna didn't know any better she would say it was a blaster of some kind. Her mouth opened in shock as the blaster was levelled between her eyes.
'One o'clock!' roared the Doctor indicating for the men to fire, they did so sending a huge boom echoing throughout the city and a cannonball flying skywards, striking the side of the Cybership in an explosion of sparks and flame.
'You are Professor Martin Doyle, you're stronger than this! This isn't you, it's the Cybermen! Fight this!' Anna struggled to get through to Doyle whose mind was now fully converted. Just as he was about to fire, there was a huge explosion from behind them, throwing the two of them on to the cold metal ground. Fire and smoke billowing behind them as glass and shards of metal flew off into the room. Anna coughed as she raised her head to look at the hole where the porthole used to be, the ship lurched violently to the left, sending her sliding across the floor, scrabbling for something to hold on to. Before she knew it, the cold air of the Edinburgh night was rushing through her hair as she held on to the bed, legs dangling outside as the Castle walls grew larger and larger as the ship moved ever closer.
