Fairfax had, for the first time in months, managed to get off to sleep almost instantly. His sound sleep, however, was eventually interrupted by a high pitched chirrup from somewhere in his room. Stirring from his slumber, bleary eyed and disorientated, Fairfax swung his legs over the side of the bed and tried to wake himself up. It was his benefactors, no doubt to check on his progress with the morning's meeting at Holyrood. He staggered over to his cupboard, feeling his chest tighten as he did so, beginning to cough before pulling the doors open to look into the glass. The beeping had stopped and he was now greeted with the slightly distorted image of the cold, blank face of the Cyberleader. Clearing his throat, Fairfax greeted the face in the glass. 'Good morning...'
'Our plans have changed.' the Cyberleader stated coldly. 'We will distract the military whilst your belljar cadavers and our ground units take control of the palace.'
Fairfax frowned. 'Military? Ground units? You talk of battle sir, I thought I was to convince the Royals of the importance of your technology?'
'Words will only delay our plans Fairfax. Convincing your King by force is the only means open to us. You will obey.' The glass was back to being clear again, the face of the Cyberleader disappearing. Fairfax sat down on his bed, shaken, he was to lead an opposing force straight to the King himself. Such an act was treason, he could not agree to the demands of the Cyberleader, and yet, if he did not, he would surely be killed like his poor, dear friend Martin. He looked to the Royal invitation lying open on his desk and sighed, perhaps some advancements in science were worth such a huge risk.
'Everything, no matter how seemingly invincible it can be, has a weakness.' began the Doctor, pacing the cold, cobbled floor of Major McCallum's quarters. 'For example, for me, it's the compactor scene in Toy Story 3....reduces me to tears everytime.'
Anna arched an eyebrow, all the wonders of the universe to behold and he's reduced to tears by a group of toys in peril. That's what she loved about the Doctor, constantly surprising her.
'The Cybermen's main weakness is gold, preferrably targeted at the vent on their chest.' he was pointing at a sketch of a Cyberman he had done on some parchment.
'So you want us to hand over whatever gold we have and use it against these Cybermen?' McCallum asked, still suspicious.
The Doctor put a hand in his pocket and pulled out a leather pouch, then tossed it on McCallum's table. It split open on impact, revealing a large number of gold coins. 'Wouldn't dream of it. Use this, there's plenty more in the TARDIS. Don't really have much need for it myself.'
'TARDIS?' McCallum asked.
'It's a....Anna will get you it.' the Doctor replied, looking to Anna.
Anna nodded, slightly unsure. 'You'd better leave me a treasure map...and if I'm staying here, where are you going to go?'
The Doctor looked solemn for a second, before turning back to the Major. 'Have you any idea what's brought the King to Holyrood so early in the year?'
McCallum shook his head, scooping up the pouch and coins in his hand. 'We are not privvy to the Monarch's plans Doctor, only that he is in the city for a few days.'
The Doctor stopped pacing, placed a hand on his chin and puffed out his cheeks.
'What are you thinking Doctor?' Anna asked.
'That the surprise visit of King George IV and the surprise visit of the Cybermen are linked in some way. And I can't stop thinking about those belljar creatures I encountered outside Fairfax's house.'
'Belljar creatures? The decaying flesh of a man brought to life by machinery....' she trailed off.
'What was that?'
'When I was captured by the Cybermen, a man was put in the cell with me, a friend of Professor Fairfax. He talked of a corpse being brought back to life by machinery, machinery given to Fairfax by the Cybermen. You don't think that...'
The Doctor clapped his hands together. '...that Fairfax is going to try and take this machinery across the British empire? Oh absolutely.' He grinned widely. 'Of course, I'll have to stop him.'
Constable Norrie, Anna and Major McCallum were watching as the Doctor clambered onto the carriage and took the reins. 'I have men positioned all around the Esplanade Doctor, they will provide covering fire to give myself and Miss Talbot time to modify the rifles.'
The Doctor nodded. 'Good luck to you all, now if you'll excuse me, I have an appointment with the King!' and with that the carriage set off towards the Royal Mile, out through the Esplanade. He only got a few yards on to the Mile before he pulled back on the reins, bringing the horses and the carriage to a halt. The length of the Mile shimmered silver in the moonlight as a large army of Cybermen marched on Edinburgh Castle.
