The Doctor and Fairfax were led through the winding corridors of the Cybership. Fairfax couldn't help but notice the Doctor was staring at his cane. 'Professor....did the Cybermen fit the control device to your cane?'
Fairfax shook his head. 'No, they provided me with the control device and I had it fitted into the cane. Why?'
The Doctor rubbed the back of his neck, glancing at the four Cybermen marching a short distance behind them. He lowered his voice to a whisper. 'Because I couldn't help but notice it has a gold tip. The Cybermen may seem invincible but they have a weakness and that weakness if gold....'
'Cease talking!' demanded the Cybermen. 'We are entering the command deck where the CyberLeader will decide your fate.'
The doors slid open to reveal the command deck, the Cyberleader was standing staring down at Edinburgh Castle through the view screen. It turned to face both the Doctor and Fairfax. 'Doctor, excellent. You will witness the Cybermen's victory from here.'
'Do we have to?' the Doctor sighed. 'The Professor and I are really rather busy people and...' he caught sight of the bank of monitors and buttons positioned by the Cyberleaders chair. If he wasn't mistaken, they were secondary controls for every system on the ship. If he could only get close enough. 'Actually Cyberleader I do have a question; the Cybermen, as far as I'm aware, don't have access to time travel technology, so how did you all come to be here? This is a big ship, a Cyber warship, it shouldn't be here.'
'You are correct Doctor, the Cybermen do not possess time travel technology. However, our warship was in battle over the planet Kreon when we fell through a time fissure. We arrived above this planet, and decided to convert the population.'
'Because the Cybermen invading Earth has gone so swimmingly in the past!' the Doctor mocked. He took a couple of steps forward, towards the Cyberleaders chair, to get a better look at the control panels. He caught sight of the Cybermen on the Castle ramparts below, finishing off the remaining soldiers. He only hoped that Anna, Norrie, McCallum and anyone else had survived, and would survive long enough for him to reverse the transmat.
'The Doctor will stay where he is!' demanded one of the Cybermen, raising its gun.
The Doctor raised his hands. 'Sorry, just trying to get a better view of the battle.' He still couldn't make out the buttons that controlled the transmat, if he could just get away with a couple of steps further...
Fairfax, noticing the Doctor's predicament decided to try and distract the Cybermen. 'But even if you do manage to neutralise the Castle, there's still the Royal Guard at the Palace! And you've yet to capture and convert the King!'
The Doctor turned round to see Fairfax step forward , tapping the Cyberleader on the shoulder. 'And on my planet, it's really rather rude not to look at someone when they're talking to you.'
Suddenly, the Cyberleader swung round, slamming his right forearm against Fairfax's jaw, sending him crashing backwards on to the steel floor. It felt damned near broken and he struggled to get back up, feeling his lungs tighten once more and a heavy coughing fit about to follow. 'That's enough!' roared the Doctor.
'Professor Fairfax has betrayed us, he no longer serves a purpose. Eliminate him.' ordered the Cyberleader.
Fairfax staggered to his feet, using his cane to help himself up. One of the Cybermen turned his weapon on Fairfax, ready to fire. 'Professor, I'm so sorry.' cried the Doctor. 'But remember something before you die, you were a good man. A good man with a heart of gold...'
Fairfax glanced down at his cane, then up at the Cyberman about to fire at him and swung it up from the floor, ramming it forward in a stabbing motion, piercing the Cyberman's chestplate. It gurgled, staggering backwards, gun falling to the floor. Fairfax grabbed the gun, thought back to his days shooting grouse in the Highlands, found the trigger and pulled it, firing a shot into the falling Cyberman, killing it.
The Doctor took advantage of this sudden distraction to leap for the control panel, producing his sonic screwdriver and attempting to reverse the transmat beam.
Fairfax fired some more shots from the weapon, striking a number of Cybermen. Monitors around the command deck exploded, sending sparks and shards of glass firing everywhere, providing cover fire for the Doctor. He saw the Cyberleader marching forward, his imposing frame casting a long shadow over where the Doctor was working. Fairfax raised the gun, pulled the trigger; the Cyberleaders chestplate exploded in a shower of orange and red sparks. Fairfax collapsed to the floor, unable to prolong his coughing fit any longer.
'Ah-ha!' cried the Doctor, the whirring of his sonic screwdriver ceased and another noise replaced it. 'All remaining Cybermen are on their way back to the ship. I only hope I wasn't too late.'
Fairfax dragged himself forward. 'So you've sent reinforcements....' he wheezed. '...here to destroy us?'
The Doctor smiled sadly. 'Yes...yes I suppose I have.' He took another look at the control panels, and Fairfax could see an idea formulating in this great mans head. 'However! From here I can shut down the ships engines, which if I can angle the ship correctly will send us crashing into the depths of the Nor Loch underneath!' He began fiddling with buttons, clearly in his element.
'Us Doctor?'
The Doctor nodded gravely. 'I've reversed the transmat beam, therefore I can't use it to send us both down. The reinforcements could arrive on deck in enough time to use it to return to the Castle.'
'Then show me what to do Doctor, I'm not long for this world, and have done such terrible deeds these past months. I will send you back and destroy the control panel before reinforcements arrive.'
Fairfax shook his head. 'No, they provided me with the control device and I had it fitted into the cane. Why?'
