Anna, Norrie, McCallum and his two remaining men levelled their rifles at the doorframe as the Cybermen stomped through. Anna knew that they didn't stand a chance, with such close range weapons and so little ammunition they'd be dead in no time. The Cybermen were close now, the sound of their steel boots against the stone floor growing louder and louder. They all gripped their rifles ready to pull the trigger when there was an almighty flash of bright white light that filled the room. Norrie peered round from his hiding place and started chuckling. 'They're gone! All six ae them! Gone!'
Anna peered round now and saw that Norrie was indeed correct, the Cybermen had vanished. Suddenly, there was a smaller flash of white light, and there, in the centre of the cells of Edinburgh Castle stood the Doctor, standing in his beige raincoat and brown tweed three piece suit. Anna ran over and hugged him. 'You're safe!' she cried. 'And you got rid of the Cybermen!'
Fairfax wiped a tear from his eye and nodded to himself, he had done good. That's all that mattered, that in his last moments he was doing something good. He could feel the ship begin to descend now, and could hear the distant marching of the Cybermen. He dabbed his mouth with his handkerchief and raised the gun for one final time, aimed it directly at the control panel and fired.
The Doctor, Anna, Norrie and McCallum watched as the large, shimmering silver Cybership lurched down toward the Nor Loch beneath the Castle where all of Old Edinburgh's waste and refuse ended up. There was a sudden explosion from somewhere, the Doctor guessed the command deck, and the ship began descending fast until it hit the thick brown and green marshland of the Loch and began sinking. The four of them turned away.
'So that's it now is it? The Cybermen, Fairfax, the Bell Jar Cadavers all gone?' asked Anna.
The Doctor nodded, rubbing his chin, suddenly looking very worried. 'Ah. Well, actually I believe we may have left the last remaining cadaver in the Palace. With the ship inside the loch, the command signal will have faded and it'll be dead but still, that technology should be destroyed.'
McCallum nodded. 'I'll send some men to collect it Doctor, then we'll throw it in the Nor Loch with its creators.' He then turned to Norrie. 'And Constable, if you ever tire of chasing down pickpockets there'll always be a place for you amongst my men. You'll make a fine soldier.'
Norrie's eyes widened. 'Really Major? My faither would be proud.' He grinned.
'Oh, and Constable, if you could let Mrs Campbell know about the fate of her husband?' Norrie nodded gravely. 'Well then, Major, Constable, we'll be off then. We've got a show to see and I'm afraid we turned up a little too early.' He smiled and shook both Norrie and McCallum by the hand before turning to the TARDIS and stepping inside.
Anna followed, shaking McCallum's hand before giving Constable Norrie a peck on the cheek. The young policeman blushed. 'It's been an honour fighting alongside you both.' She smiled, then followed the Doctor inside.
When Anna entered the TARDIS, the Doctor appeared to be having a conversation on the phone, which was impossible surely because how could he receive phonecalls in 1829?
'I see, yes....well she's just come in now.' there was something in the Doctor's tone that had Anna very worried. 'I'll pass you over.' He removed the receiver from his ear and handed it to her.
'You have a working phone in the TARDIS?'
The Doctor nodded. 'It's Brigadier Harchester for you.'
'And you can receive phonecalls from 2012?' Anna asked, incredulous.
'I'll explain later, please, Anna, you'll want to take this phonecall.'
Anna raised the receiver to her ear warily. 'Hello?'
'Anna, this is Brigadier Harchester. There's no real easy way to tell you this. It's about your father.'
Her father? He had been dead since she was 13. 'Have they found out more about the accident? Have they finally found a body?'
'In a manner of speaking yes...he's at UNIT H.Q Anna, and he doesn't look a day older....'
