It's been said so often, and will continue to be said (quite rightly) forever, Lis Sladen's portrayal of Sarah Jane Smith is the defining Doctor Who companion. The fact that the character received such a well received revival in 21st century Who highlighted this. Found this apt quote from Sarah Jane in the climax to School Reunion: "Pain and loss, they define us as much as happiness or love." Seems somewhat apt in light of this devastating news.
Farewell Sarah Jane.

This talented daughter of Liverpool will be sadly missed. Though I technically thought the writers were a little sexist and harsh when it came to the Sarah Jane character, she was one of my favourite companions due to Lis Sladen's portrayal. I though she was very endearing. Lis Sladen died far too young. She will be very missed. www.youtube.com/watch?v=I915hzlBP8M - my favourite Lis Sladen clip...maybe. www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHh2Nvuzk8c&feature=related

I can't believe it. Liz was only 63! I'm heartbroken, especially on the heals of Nicholas Courtney's passing. She was the greatest DW companion ever. RIP Elisabeth Sladen.

I can still hardly believe it. First the Brig, now Sarah Jane. Whoever is playing the game is playing a cruel hand at the moment. And such a young age as well.
Lis, you may be the Doctor's Sarah Jane, but you were my Sarah Jane to many many fans, and you will be greatly missed.
