Anna pushed open the door of her flat as far as she could, becoming wedged in a considerable amount of post. How long had it been since the Aqualons? Judging by her bills and final demands it had been a good few months, maybe she'd get the Doctor to drop her off at the bank a month or two ago and set up a direct debit. 'Sorry about the mess Dad, like I say....I've been away for a while.' She crouched down and picked up several pastel coloured envelopes at the top of the pile of post; birthday cards. She was about to open the one from her mother when she realised, her father hadn't asked about her. Not once. It seemed odd that, upon realising he'd been missing for 13 years he wouldn't enquire about the woman he married.
'That's alright Anna, nice little place you have here though. Glad to see UNIT wages are go a bit further these days....' he continued in the background as she opened her mothers card. To my darling daughter on your 26th birthday, best wishes for a wonderful day love from Mum and Neil xxxx Ah yes, Uncle Neil....how would she explain that to her Dad? She placed the cards on the coffee table and moved over to the bookcase in the corner of the living room to find the London Visitor Guide she'd bought after first moving to the city four years previously as a young UNIT cadet. She had put it in the bookshelf several months later when she realised the busy schedule of defending the planet from alien invasion wasn't going to leave her much free time to explore the city. She'd bookmarked several places of interest and her father had agreed to take her to them, once they had exchanged the out of circulation notes that were in his wallet.
She couldn't stop thinking about what the Doctor had been talking about, the stage psychic who was going to pull some massive trick in Hyde Park tomorrow, reuniting everyone with their lost relatives. Pushing thoughts of whether or not both events were linked to the back of her mind she snatched the book from the shelf and led her father back out of the flat.
The Doctor handed Sarah back her phone. 'Well?'
'He's checking with the tracking stations right now, but I don't see any reason to hang around waiting for him to call us back. We may as well take a drive out to Mr Bolam's secluded pool and see for ourselves.'
Sarah grinned, proucing her car keys. 'Thought you'd never ask.'
Bruce Saxon had been a roadie for decades, been all over the world with the likes of the Stones, Rush, Status Quo, Whitesnake but had never seen such a complicated sound set up as detailed in these schematics. Several of the cables were unlike anything he had ever seen before, cold and clammy to the touch with an organic yet metallic feel about them they kind of creeped him out. The site manager was looking flustered as he stomped his way over. 'Have you connected these cables yet or what?'
'Listen fella, I'm just a little unfamiliar with the technology alright?' He held up one of the cables, prompting the site manager to look slightly unwell.
'Well the tour manager is on his way over to inspect the site so get it done.' He stomped off again, leaving Bruce to fit the cable leading from the centre of the stage to the powerpoints underneath the platform. As he ducked underneath the platform he couldn't help but notice a number of foreign symbols and markings beside each different point. 'Typical....taking jobs away from good British industry...'
Sarah pulled over at the patch of land which had been designated as a car park, there were several picnic tables laid out nearby and a family were sat down to lunch, looking out at the countryside. It was peaceful, tranquil. 'Right then, I guess we follow signs for Angels Fall? Apt name...'
The Doctor nodded, placing his raincoat in the backseat of Sarahs car and unbuttoning his suit jacket on account of the summer afternoon heat. The two of them set off following the signs.
'How long has it been now?' Sarah asked. 'Since Eldrad, then that business with the Death Zone?'
The Doctor smiled sadly. 'A long time, longer for me than it's been for you I imagine.'
'I always thought you'd come back.' Sarah said, as they reached the cliff edge.
The Doctor produced the sonic screwdriver from the inside pocket of his suit jacket and began waving it around, before gazing at the handle. 'Something definitely landed here, there's faint traces of an energy signature, can't quite make it out but it's certainly nothing of this planet.'
'Does energy readings now does it?' Sarah quipped.
The Doctor turned, placing the sonic back in his suit jacket. 'Software updates.'
'So if an alien craft crashed here, and that's what you think gave Bolam his psychic abilities....well I mean, why? What do they have to gain? And is the craft still here?'
The Doctor shook his head. 'No, the readings are too faint, it's been moved. As for why they gave Bolam his psychic abilities, I really don't know.' The Doctor suddenly realised the texture of the ground underfoot wasn't right, glancing down he noticed tyre tracks leading back the way they came.
