Brigadier Harchester was just about to leave the office for the night when his mobile started ringing. He slid a hand into his inside pocket produced it and saw his wifes name on the caller I.D. He took a deep breath and tried to decide whether or not to take the call, he knew exactly what it would be about. Her father had passed away a couple of months ago and it had hit her really hard, she'd been signed off from work on bereavement leave for a month whilst trying to arrange the funeral. He'd arranged for someone to watch over H.Q. for a month whilst he helped her get through it, and over the past week or two she'd been getting better. Smiling again, laughing again, it was good to have her back, that was until she learned of Bolam's show. She pleaded with him to take her and if the Doctor was correct and it was some alien plot, then he wanted his wife as far away from it as possible. He pushed the green button to take the call.
'Jess darling, I'm just leaving, I'll be home in an hour.'
'That's okay, I'll start getting dinner ready. I just wondered if you'd reconsidered about tomorrow?'
'Jess, I really don't think it's a good idea....it's a cheap trick by some publicity hungry psychic. Anyway, the Doctor thinks that....' she'd hung up. Cursing he was about to put the mobile back in his pocket when it rang again; Anna Talbot. 'Anna? What's up?'
'Is the Doctor about?'
'The Doctor? No, not seen him in a couple of hours not since he and Miss Smith went out to Angels Fall. Tried calling him but there's no answer. Can I help?'
He could hear her voice cracking on the other end of the line, as if she was fighting back tears. 'I think he was right....I don't think this is my father.'
'Where are you now?' He pulled on his coat and hurried out the door.
Sarah opened her eyes, she was in a darkened room with steel walls and no windows. Trying to move, she realised she was held to the wall by chains, only they weren't made of metal, some kind of light, whatever it was it burnt her skin when she brushed against them. Looking around the room, she couldn't see the Doctor anywhere. Was he dead? She sighed, thinking of how many times she'd ended up locked up by malevolent alien forces and what these particular ones were planning when there was the sound of the sonic screwdriver from the other side of the door. It swung open and into the darkness stepped an imposingly tall man with a mass of brown curls for hair and prominently displayed teeth. As he entered, he trailed a long scarf behind him. 'Hello Sarah Jane.'
'And we're sure that's the one she misses the most?' the bald man asked.
His associate, a short reptilian looking man with yellow and blue scaled skin nodded, readjusting the tie on his blue pinstripe suit. 'Absolutely. She'll decide to join him and we won't have to worry about her anymore.'
'Excellent, summon everyone else to the conference room I'm sure they're all dying to meet a Timelord.' the bald man turned to the Doctor who was sat at the head of a long glass table, bound in a steel office chair, no longer struggling to escape.
'Sarah's not going to fall for that you know.'
'I wouldn't be so sure Doctor, deep down everyone wants to be reunited with the ones they've lost. And that's what we're facilitating here.' Grinned the bald man as he took a seat at the conference table.
The Doctor leant forward, eyebrows arched, a look of fury on his face. 'Except it's not is it? You don't have the keys to unlock the doors to the afterlife, I'm still not entirely sure what it is you are unlocking the doors to. But when I find out I'm going to stop you.'
The bald man sat back in his chair and steepled his fingers, the sunglasses removed and training his glassy pink eyes on the Doctor. 'Oh of course you are, because you're the great and powerful Doctor.' The doors to the conference room swung open and several different alien lifeforms in different coloured suits walked in and took their seats around the conference table. 'My name is Klarvell, and my associates and I are what you'd call Solutions Consultants. We're hired by different governments, royal families, military groups across the universe to provide solutions.'
The Doctor's eyes widened in horror, and looked at the assembled Consultants. 'Oh no....am I being pitched to?'
Brigadier Harchester met Anna outside the Hawley Arms, where she sat on the pavement head in her hands. He placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. 'Where's George?'
'I don't know, he's been acting strange all day, hasn't touched any food or drink, hasn't asked about my mother. He went downstairs to get me another drink but never came back. It's as if he just vanished in a puff of smoke like a gho...I don't know. What if the Doctor's right? What if he's a psychic projection by some invading alien?'
Harchester frowned. 'The Doctor didn't actually say that did he?'
'No....no, he didn't. And I flew off the handle at him for suggesting Andre Bolam could be involved. Have you found him yet?'
Harchester shook his head. 'Look, I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explaination as to your fathers whereabouts. The UNIT medic is perfectly happy that your father is flesh and blood.'
'So where has my flesh and blood father disappeared off to?'
The Doctor released Sarah from her chains and helped her down from the wall, smiling at her with that broad toothy grin from so many years ago. 'Is it really you?'
'Aaah Sarah, of course it's me. Got lost on the way back from Gallifrey...' he boomed, stepping to the corner of the cell and clicking his fingers. Before her eyes, the TARDIS appeared, bathed in golden light. Sarah couldn't help but be drawn to it, to the Doctor, beckoning her to join him. And so she began walking forward, toward to the warm welcoming golden light.
