I'm sure the staggeringly large amount of people watching him couldn't have helped. I know it's only natural (If I'd been there I'd probably have gone myself) but for a creature that's already lost and halfway up a river not known for it's cleanliness the added stress must've been unbearable. And the whole lifting onto a boat to take him out to sea must've been too much.
