There was a silence while they all considered the implications of this last remark. Finally Saoirse said, “that’s what the Being at the stone circle said – beware the dark power.”
“Yes”, the Doctor replied. “It all fits now. Some evil entity from outside this universe is attempting to enter it via the portal in the Mound. That’s probably why my TARDIS is being drained of energy, too – it’s being drawn through the portal into an alternate dimension.”
”And why you couldn’t find out the source of the energy drain” Katsumi added. “It’s outside this universe. ”
The Doctor nodded. “Mmm. That could be just a natural phenomenon of course. Or it could not be. If it’s not, it implies that whatever is trying to gain access to this universe has trapped the TARDIS here deliberately. And that implies that it knows who I am. Which is rather worrying.” The Doctor could not think of many occasions in his travels when he had had encounters with beings that were not part of this universe.
He turned to Francois. “Your colleague, Giles. You don’t trust him, do you?”
“No”, Francois replied. “I don’t quite. I’ve known him a long time, and he’s never been a pleasant person at the best of times. But over the last few years….very often, when we have been on conferences together …I’ve sometimes heard him talking, as though to himself, when he thinks no-one is listening. And he pulled every string he could get his hands on when this project was announced, to get his friends in high places to appoint him director. I believe now he wanted the post because…”
“..he is involved with whatever is behind all this.” The Doctor finished the sentence for him. “Professor, go back to the manor please, and keep an eye on him. Don’t be too obtrusive, but try and find out what his role in all this is, if you can. Meanwhile, I will have to go into the centre of the Mound itself. That’s where the earth energies will be at their strongest, that’s where the portal is likely to be. I intend to try and enter whatever dimension it is that the Tuatha de Danaan – and whatever else we are dealing with – are coming from. That may be the only way of finding out what the threat we are facing is.”
“Couldn’t there be a simpler solution?” Colonel O’Brien put in. “If some hostile entity is trying to use the Mound as a means to enter this universe, wouldn’t it be better just to blast it? Take away its point of access.”
Saoirse looked at him, horrified. “You can’t do that!” she cried. “It’s a national monument, it’s a World Heritage Site!”
“The military mind never changes, does it?” the Doctor sighed. “If you can’t understand something, blow it up.” He turned to the Colonel. “All in all, I think my solution is better.”
“Well, you do it your way for now” the Colonel replied. “But if there are any further incidents here – anything of a threatening nature – then my men will have to act. When do you plan to try and enter this….parallel universe?”
“Tomorrow night if possible” the Doctor replied. “Around midnight, that’s when the veil between the worlds seems thinnest.”
“There’s just one problem though” said Francois. “If the opening of the portal is dependent on the particular gravitational effects that come about at full moon, then the moon is well on the wane by now. The effects may be weakening.”
“Mmm, that’s probably why we only perceive a partial outline of the Tuatha de Danaan – there is only a partial opening and they are only partly materialising in this universe. Yes, if I’m going to cross over completely into their universe, I’ll need another source of energy.”
“Which raises a certain problem,” Katsumi said, “as the TARDIS hasn’t got any energy at the moment.”
“Mmm” The Doctor tapped his fingers together as he mused. He seemed to recall being in a position like this once before – where was it? Oh yes, Vortis, when the Animus had also drained the TARDIS of energy. “Not quite! We’re not quite stuck. My old ring!”
