Her hand clasped about her mouth, Sarah was finding it just as hard not to scream as she was finding it hard not to be sick. The figure stumbling towards her was a travesty. Almost a cadaver of humanity. The skin of the man, if it was a man, was black and glistening. The left side of the face looked as though the flesh had melted. The eye was no longer there and the cheek bone could be seen protruding from the charred flesh. The side of the mouth had almost been eaten away and charred teeth and gums could be made out. The figure reached out a hand. The flesh of the hand had been decayed and melted in the same manner as the flesh on the figures face. Sarah could see the tendons and movement of the bones through the charred flesh.
“Help me…” The figure gargled in a voice that was far from human. He was wearing the navy blue uniform that signified that he was part of the city militia. “Please. Help me.” He choked, a thick dark red mucus spilling from his charred lips.
Sarah struggled to hear the man as he chocked again and spat something reddish to the floor. Sarah retched when she realised what it was; his tongue.
The man lurched towards her mumbling something that Sarah couldn’t make out before he collapsed to his knees. Sarah was rooted to the spot through fear. The man coughed again before vomiting blood onto the floor. Retching, Sarah backed away as the man fell down dead at her feet.
Sobbing, Sarah turned to run, bumping into two more militia members.
“Easy miss.” One of them said. “You shouldn’t be here. This area is restricted.”
“That man.” Sarah started.
“We’ll see to him, miss.” The other man said. “We need to take you to a secure ward in the infirmary. You may have contracted the virus.”
The Baron surveyed his monitor. The girl had been found. He leant back in is chair and smiled. A sudden thought came to him and he leant forward, activating a communication switch.
“Zeg, status report.”
“The outbreak has been contained my Lord Baron.” The tinny voice replied.
“Has the new prescription with Visaralium had any effect?” The Baron asked.
“Some my Lord.” Zeg replied. “We have still not had any cures.”
“Keep me informed Zeg.” The Baron replied. He switched off the communicator and leant back again. “Not long.” He mused to himself. “Not long and I can abandon this forsaken hole of a planet.”
“How can blood stay wet in this temperature?” Harry shivered. “Its not possible, unless Sarah isn’t far ahead of us.”
“Not every creature in the universe has the same biological rules as you humans you know.” The Master said. “They may have a similar external appearance, but inside they may be very different.”
“Doctor?” Harry asked. “What do you think?”
“Oh, you don’t have to take my word for it.” The Master snorted. “Look around you. Do you see any foot prints other than our own?”
Harry wasn’t listening; he was looking at the Doctor, who appeared to be sulking.
“I say, what’s wrong Doctor?” Harry asked.
“I’m not happy. Not happy at all.” The Doctor sulkily replied.
“Because I’m here?” The Master asked, in a confirming tone.
“Yes, because you’re here.” The Doctor snapped, turning round. “You cause nothing but trouble, and no doubt it’s your fault we’re both in this mess in the first place.”
“My dear Doctor.” The Master protested, holding his hands up. “I am as much in the dark as you. I don’t know why we’re here, and earlier today I was attacked by an animal in these woods. An animal that descended from a tree and which may well be around here, as I wounded it attempting to escape. Considering that the only footprints in the snow are ours, I doubt you friend came this way.”
The Doctor snorted. “Alright then.” He sulkily held out a hand to the Master. “I suppose we have no choice. I need your help to find Sarah and to deal with the Baron. It was always both of us at the academy.”
The Master shook the Doctors hand. “Now, if you would indulge me, I detected a city upon my arrival on this planet. I was on my way there when I was attacked and your friend helped me.”
“Why aren’t we trying for there then?” Harry asked. “Are they decent chaps? I mean, they could help us to find Sarah. She is out here somewhere.”
The Doctor and Master didn’t answer. They stood there silently, as if listening.
“What is it?” Harry asked.
The Doctor merely help up his hand, silencing Harry.
“Look, I don’t know if you Time Lords have ultra sensitive hearing, but I can’t hear a bally thing through this wind.” Harry protested.
“My dear Mr. Sullivan, there’s a motor in the wind. Someone is nearby.” The Master purred.
The sound started to become audible, a clear sound of a motor engine. Suddenly three motor snow skids burst through the snow and trees and several armed men in navy blue uniforms jumped off levelling their weapons at the group. Resigned, the Doctor, Master and Harry raised their hands.
“Take us to your leader.” The Doctor smiled.
