There are always disagreements about who is/was a companion, usually revolving around: - Grace
- Katrina
- Sara Kingdom
- Adam
- Lethbridge-Stewart, Yates & Benton
What should the criteria be?

I think that all but those except the UNIT lot are companions, I don't know why, I just do

What about they have to...
Appear in three or more contiguous stories,
or...
travel in the TARDIS for at least two contiguous stories
or...
Snog the Doctor
;D

I do not consider Grace as a companion as she is in only one story. She assisted in that story. If you class here as a companion then you may as well say Will is a companion from The Awakening.
If you go with the Dr at the end of a story and appear in the next one at least (like Adam) then I feel you should be classed as a companion.
That is something I don't recall anyone from UNIT ever doing.

I think the companion can act as what a viewer might say or do if they met the Doctor, they can kind of speak for us and ask stuff that we might ask, if that makes sense?

I think it's a case that Grace is a supporting character rather than a companion, she gets pretty close to the Doctor yet she's more of a foil to him than someone who travels with him.
Adam is a guest onboard the TARDIS, making his sole journey to Satellite 5 and then being marched swiftly off by the end.
The Brigadier, Yates and Benton are supporting characters because most of the time they are on Earth and aside from their one journey off in the TARDIS in the Three Doctors, unless you count The Paradise of Death, they become guests to the TARDIS.
Now, Katarina is essentially a guest who travels to the next story yet she becomes integral and her death pushes her beyond the confines of merely being a supporting character. So Guest-on-the verge of companion.
Sara Kingdom does travel in time, in the TARDIS, visiting different places and it's quite feasible to consider that minature adventures could take place inbetween the Feast of Steven and Volcano. Therefore, Sara becomes a companion.
