I don't think the business about the Doctor being half-human took any mystery away from the character, certainly not as much as the War Games did. It may well be, of course, that the Movie should have started off depicting the Doctor as a man of mystery, as An Unearthly Child did, as it was aimed at a new audience, most of whom had presumably never seen the original series.
I must admit, I did think Eric Roberts was great as the Master, but the business about turning into a snake, spitting venom, etc, was certainly another of those unexplained things that I think were the movie's major faults.

As for the Doctor being half-human, it jars in the way that they add Gallifreyan references to the new scenario, having 13 lives, two hearts but then says he's half-human on his Mother's side.

Yes, I agree, the references were completely gratuitous. But I liked McGann. I would have liked to have seen more of him.
