Gigantic grin, Harpo Marx curls, deep voice, floppy hat, jelly babies; oh and the the ten-mile scarf...
What more could you want? ;D
Actually for most Americans, Tom Baker was THE Doctor. I was actually shocked to find out that other, very diverse, actors had played the part.

Tom Baker, when he was good, was very, very good indeed. His first three seasons were classic stuff. Even when the stories were so-so, like The Sontaran Experiment for instance, his presence managed to carry them. But...when he was bad, he was an actual embarrassment. His performance in the Horns of Nimon, for instance, is enough to make you cringe. In fact, by season 17 it was obvious he wasn't taking the role seriously any more. There was a marked improvement in season 18, but it has to be admitted, he overstayed his welcome, and all things considered, it was as well he moved on.

I think Tom became a bit stale during the middle to later part of his era (from around season 15 to 17) but he became more subdued and interesting during his final season.

Tom Baker is my favourite of the classic Doctors, but I think I was pre-prejudiced in his favour. I already liked the actor from watching "The Silver Chair".

What was "The Silver Chair"? It was the last in the old Chronicles of Narnia movies. (Sorry it took so long to reply.)

I am pretty sick of him myself; he is everywhere! You would think that only one actor has played the Doctor! Really, his reign (bar a few good stories) makes me want to mutilate my ears and eyes! Truly horrendous at times!
The writers made the Doctor into a clown and a clown is not what the Doctor should be. Fortunately, the last season was pretty good but just makes me weep due to the fact that it took almost a decade for a really good season to be made.
