What can I say? I liked John Simm's insanity.

Roger Delgado. The first Master and in my opinion the best. The Beaver/Pratt was interesting and unique amongst the Timelords of the show but he didn't last long enough. Ainley came close to Delgado but lacked a certain something (maybe it was the lack of chemistry with Baker...he had good chemistry with Davison though).
Gordon Tipple had an ultra-short reign and isn't included in the poll but he fits well with the Virgin novelisations (he fits the Rathbone-esque description) and looks the part.
Haven't you forgot Eric Roberts? Certainly not the best but still.
Also I prefer Jacobi's Master to Simm's; mainly because of 'Screams of The Shalka', he wasn't given enough time in 'Utopia'.
Pryce was good as the Master and should be in the official continuity.

Why is Derek Jacobi not in the list?

When all's said and done there can only be one choice. Roger Delgado - the original and still the best.

It has to be Delgado, he is the definitive Master, and anyone who disagrees should take a look at Ainleys portrayal, he was basically asked to camp up the Delgado version instead of doing something new with the role like Jacobi, Beevers/Pratt or Simm. It's such a shame to watch a story like Survival and see just how fantastic he really was, and how he should have been given more of a chance to shine instead of do the whole panto villain thing, evil disguises (which in Time Flight serves no purpose whatever...) the whole shebang.

Time Flight was my least favorite Master story and my least favorite Davison story.

I think Ainley was as original as Jacobi...though Jacobi was mainly an animated robotic version and when he was live-acton he wasn't given enough time to be anythink other than an angry Delgado-Ainley Master.
Lets face it, the Master isn't as schizoid as the Doctor. I remeber an adventure where the Timelords mention the Doctor's drastic change of mannerisms to be unusual.

While I loved Jacobi's portrayal of the Professor, -- and I am partial to professors ;D -- I found his portrayal of the Master to be a little over the top. I think that's partly because he had too few lines as the Master. That one line was too much: "IIIIIII AAAAMMMMM THAA MAAAASSSSTTTEEERRR!!!!"

I disagree with you there John. That line made the hairs on my neck stand on end.

I think Derek Jacobi would have been perfect to carry on portraying the Master ;D

I think Derek Jacobi would have been perfect to carry on portraying the Master ;D I would have liked to have seen that too. Especially as ohn Simm hammed it up.
