I just found the photo of the newly designed Cybermen. Very cool.
A slightly retro look, but not stupidly so. Plus, they look very buff, and therefore terrifying. Not the 'man in silver wetsuit' look at all.

i quite like the new design, very chunky, metallic and solid, armoured.
although i am annoyed that the bbc page (my homepage) plastered this image on the front, as i didnt want to see the new cybermen untill they were revealed on screen!
ah well!

It's got to be admitted, they look a lot more like robots than the older variety did.

Kind of retro '50s style. Apparently, Rose's father is going to be in the episode, so it will be occuring in the past. Maybe the '70s.
Perhaps that explains cybermen's flared trousers.

Here's one to replace it, (hosted on photobucket.com)

Looking at the facial expression, he looks quite tragic, like he's in pain. But I like the Cyber-Speedo! ;D ;D ;D

I imagine it's been given this appearance because that's the general public's view of the Cybermen; silver robotic creatures. So effectively the horrible secret about them will be revealed in the two parter. But going into scary designs a moment, on BBC1 now is the film Virus, surely that could have been a much more horrific means of bringing back the Cybermen as more bio-mechanical creatures. Plus the similarities are there too; the spider-like robots working on the transformation and spare parts of people. Skulls enhanced with folds of flesh and muscle interwoven with electronic devices, now that would be very effective, trouble is it might be too scary!

Darnacan, the part of the press release dealing with Rose's Dad sounds very generalized about the whole season. So, it isn't clear that Rose's Dad will appear in the Cybermen episodes. However, he could. Indeed, I have heard that the Cybermen story (at least the story early in the season) will be in an alternate universe. I also heard the Cybermen will reappear in a story later in the season (probably the season finale). It is unclear if the story late in the season will be in "our" universe or the alternate one.
