ACTION! ADVENTURE! Unlike the Auton invasion we glimpse a look into the far, far future; Earth the year 5 Billion; alien creatures, alien beings realistic, not Star-Trek-like rubber make up stuck on actors' foreheads with little conceivable political subplots but true, realistic alien beings with unique appearances; The Forest of Cheem in particular; the notion of Living tree descendants; the Blue mekon-like Moxx of Balhoun, The impressive Face of Boe in his glass casing and the powerful; Lady Cassandra voiced by Zoe Wanamaker realised as a CGI effect.
Gone are the wobbly effects, rubbery monsters and bad acting and here we have a realistic take on of original science fiction, if the first one seemed a little rushed, this one seemed very well done. With further scope revealed about the Doctor's backstory making a poignant impact on the storyline unfolding. He is a Time Lord, murmured by the Nestene Consciousness but recognised by Jabe as being, by the way she speaks of him; almost mythical, a legendary take on of this unique figure.
His world is dead and yet he still remains a mystery, which is a very good thing; the plot itself is well handled and fits very well into the 45 min format complete with some very gruesome moments; the death of the steward and gore- yes gore towards the end; something that will scare children quite literally! Even if it's not a monster...
Robotic spiders, alien beings, life and death struggle, Doctor Who is back unfortunately Rose, isn't so much a great addition; her perspective is certainly unique feeling very small and very out of her depth in the face of the extra terrestrials; certainly End of the World is a lot better a programme than the previous Rose.
Complete with the little bits of fun; Rose's telephone call and the humdrum encounter of Rose with a space plumber! All and all much better with a grim, downbeat feel to it but then we have chips! Yes, the smell of chips; only 5 billion years until the shops close...
