OK, we've had two seasons of the new Doctor Who! What do you think was the most original idea or plot of the new show? (Something not borrowed from the old series.) Twenty-eight episodes to choose from...

I think the most original was isolating the Doctor. Having him be the last Time Lord, gave the show a certain pathos and feel not seen before. The closest the old series came was the early Hartnell years, before we knew of the Time Lords.

I thought the idea of the nanogenes in The Empty Child was quite a good idea, especially reconstructing the child still with the gasmask on as they had no idea what a human would look like.

I agree with Cornelia, I loved that whole story because, essentially there were no monsters, the nanogenes were just trying to do the right thing.

Interestingly, The Empty Child was the scariest story and yet there was no monster.

Interestingly, The Empty Child was the scariest story and yet there was no monster. Yes, it was one of the few stories in the new series with a genuinely eerie "atmosphere". Quite a good story in the "psychological horror" mould, I thought.

Yeah, I'm with the consensus. Being an American, I've only seen the first season so far. But the Empty Child definitely was the most original. It was dark and eerie -- a nice departure from many of the other episodes.

For the second series, I thought The Girl in the Fireplace was most original. In one sense, it was very classic in that a seemingly absurd situation slowly reveals the logic which caused the absurdity.
Also, the scenes between Reinette and the Doctor were excellent and quite touching.
The new show has definitely shown the Doctor as a more human character, far more than the original show ever did. You would never have seen the vulnerability of the "more than just a secret" scene in the old show.
